Why Aces

Airboat Tours Loxahatchee Groves Neighbors Ride for the Open Water

People in Loxahatchee Groves already have room. The town incorporated on November 1, 2006 as Palm Beach County's 38th municipality, mainly to protect its rural lifestyle, according to its recorded history. Acre lots, horses, nurseries and dirt shoulders along A Road through F Road are the point.

What the Groves does not have is a horizon of open water. Ride out with Aces and the land falls away: sawgrass in every direction, tree islands standing up like ships and canals running straight to the sky. No pasture fence, no tree line, no neighbor's barn.

Every tour is a private boat for your own group. Your captain is talking to you, not a crowd, and every seat on our boats is a front-row seat with no middle row. The fleet has two 8-passenger airboats, four 2-passenger airboats and a 15-passenger boat, all on our boats page.

The family running it fits the neighborhood. Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, built his own airboats by hand and lives on a homestead he built himself. Captain Bill brings more than thirty years as a naturalist captain. Meet both on our captains page.

Local History

Canal Farms, a 1928 Storm and the Water Story

The Groves grew up on water management. It began as Loxahatchee Farms, a farming community laid out along the West Palm Beach Canal after the canal was finished in 1917. Settlers used the canal for access and drainage, and families have worked this ground ever since.

Then came the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. Almost every home in the community was knocked off its foundation.

Water has shaped this part of the county ever since, and the marsh you ride with us is managed water too. The Water Conservation Areas hold what remains of the northern Everglades, managed by the South Florida Water Management District. Levees ring them, canals run alongside, and inside it is still real Everglades: sawgrass, lily pads, tree islands and the wildlife that lives there.

Captain Billy has watched that water rise and fall for more than sixty years. Ask him how a wet summer changes the marsh, why the levees sit where they do or what the country looked like before the canals. On airboat tours, Loxahatchee Groves families often find the history lesson is half the ride, because so much of it is the story of their own town.

For the long view on restoring the system, the Everglades restoration program lays out the plan.

Getting From the Lettered Roads to the Launch

The marsh is close as the heron flies, but the road route goes around it. The roads run around the conservation areas rather than through them, so you head east and south to reach our ramps. The getting-here section shows real miles and minutes from town.

The usual route to The Landing:

  1. Take Okeechobee Boulevard or your lettered road down to Southern Boulevard (SR 80).
  2. Head east on Southern Boulevard to US-441/SR-7.
  3. Go south on US-441 through Wellington to Loxahatchee Road.
  4. Turn west on Loxahatchee Road and follow it to The Landing at the edge of the marsh.

The second option is our Sawgrass Expressway ramp at Atlantic Boulevard. Take Southern Boulevard east to Florida's Turnpike, then south to the Sawgrass. Captain Billy tells you which launch fits your day and confirms the meeting point when you book.

Park, meet your captain and step aboard. Folks in nearby Royal Palm Beach and Wellington drive the same US-441 corridor, and the Loxahatchee and Acreage page covers the communities just north of you.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Loxahatchee Groves?

From Loxahatchee Groves, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: Southern Blvd east to US-441/SR-7, south through Wellington to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 36 miles, roughly 65-75 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 47 miles, roughly 65-75 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Loxahatchee Groves and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Pick a Time

Rides That Fit Barn, Nursery and Farm Hours

Working rural schedules are early and long, so timing matters. When choosing airboat tours, Loxahatchee Groves households usually build around the chores:

  • After morning feed. A day tour in late morning gets you back for afternoon work.
  • Before evening feed. A sunset tour catches golden light on the sawgrass and birds heading to roost.
  • After the barn is closed. The Red Eye Gator night tour runs after dark, with a spotlight finding gator eyes along the canal.
  • Off-season breaks. Nursery and growing calendars have slower weeks; that is a good time for a longer Everglades nature tour.

Wildlife keeps its own schedule. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, plus great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas, ibis and ospreys. Roseate spoonbills show up often enough to keep everyone looking. They are wild animals, so nothing is promised.

Rural folks know gators already, and the FWC alligator page is a good refresher for the kids. On the marsh you see them in their own world instead of a backyard canal.

Groups

Group Outings for Students, Clubs and Crews

The Palm Beach State College Loxahatchee Groves campus sits right in town, which puts a lot of students, clubs and young adults nearby. A private airboat ride makes an easy group outing because the whole party rides together.

Here is how groups usually set it up:

  • Up to 15 people ride together on our largest boat.
  • Bigger groups split across several private boats that run the marsh at the same time.
  • Speed lovers can ask for a fast tour with sawgrass runs and spins.
  • Celebrations like birthdays and bachelor parties fit well; see bachelor party airboat tours.

Work crews from farms, nurseries and barns can use a ride as a thank-you day too. Our corporate and team outings page shows how employers set those up. Text Captain Billy the headcount and he will tell you which boats make sense.

Anglers in the group can ask about Everglades fishing tours, which reach water no bank fisherman gets to. Captain Billy also runs duck hunting and spearfishing trips; text him for details and timing.

Every group gets hearing protection, a briefing at the ramp and a captain who keeps the day safe and fun.

Booking From Loxahatchee Groves

Booking is old-fashioned on purpose. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your date, group size and time of day. He picks the boat, confirms which launch to use and sends directions.

Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on the boat and the length of the ride. Ask Captain Billy for yours. Nothing is sold by the seat.

Bring the basics: sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat that stays put, closed shoes and a light layer for cool mornings. Our what to wear guide covers the details. Guests who use a wheelchair can ride on boats with a boarding ramp, described on our accessible airboat tours page.

Check the forecast with the National Weather Service in Miami before you go. Summer storms usually pass quickly; if one is building, text Captain Billy and he will tell you how the day looks.

We hold a 4.9-star Google rating; read guest stories on our reviews page. Airboat tours Loxahatchee Groves riders come back for usually start with one text and end with the whole family planning the next one.

We booked a 2 hour private tour, which seems to be the right amount of time to see everything. Very easy meeting spot at a boat landing. Our captain was fantastic and I can't say enough great things. He put us on some alligators. We will definitely be back.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!

What an absolute amazing experience! Our captain is one of the most experienced men in the Everglades. We explored the wildlife including up to 30 alligators, several species of birds, frogs and fish. Well worth it, and you get a private party instead of being with strangers.

Called Captain Bill at 9 AM and asked if he could do a 10 AM run. He said yes and met me right on time. We saw two alligators, a pink spoonbill and numerous herons. If you want the real Everglades with someone who actually lives in them, book Captain Bill. Highly recommended.
