Quick Answer

For airboat tours Wellington guests can count on, Aces Airboat Tours runs private boats from The Landing at the end of Loxahatchee Road, the closest of our launches. It is a real drive south, not a quick hop, so most guests treat it as a half-day. You get your own captain, wild alligators, wading birds and miles of sawgrass.

A Day Off the Showgrounds: Airboat Tours Wellington Riders Plan Around

Winter in Wellington runs on the show calendar. Riders, trainers, grooms and parents spend long weeks at Wellington International and around the polo fields, and the one day off tends to get wasted at the mall. A morning on the water is a better use of it. Aces gives you the wild Everglades on a private boat, set up around your schedule rather than a ticket window.

Horse people already understand what we do. You know the difference between a crowded lesson barn and a quiet trail ride with someone who knows the ground. Our tours work the same way. Every boat is private, every seat is a front-row seat and the captain driving is either Captain Billy, who has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, or Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on this water.

Families from Olympia, Paddock Park and the Isles at Wellington ride with us between show weeks, and seasonal visitors staying near Grand Prix Village often bring the whole barn crew. A two-person boat suits a rider and a parent. An eight-passenger boat fits a family. The 15-passenger boat handles a full team, which is why many of these outings run as group airboat tours.

Tell Captain Billy which days you are free and he will fit the ride in.

Honest Distance

How Long Is the Drive From Wellington to the Everglades?

Most airboat tours Wellington guests book start with a real drive, so plan a half-day rather than a quick stop. The marsh you see west of town is close, but our airboats launch farther south, at The Landing on the Hillsboro Canal at the very end of Loxahatchee Road in Parkland. The usual way down is east to US-441, south to Loxahatchee Road and then west until the pavement ends.

That ramp is worth the trip. To the north lies the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, and to the south spreads Water Conservation Area 2A, wide open sawgrass that our boats run. No gift shops, no shows, no tour buses: you park, meet your captain and go.

The getting-here section below lists the exact miles and minutes from central Wellington to both The Landing and our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. Traffic on US-441 grows at rush hour and on big show weekends, so a mid-morning start or a late-afternoon sunset tour usually makes the smoothest day.

Captain Billy confirms the meeting spot when you book and will tell you honestly which ramp works best from your barn or your rental.

Wild alligator in Everglades sawgrass, the kind of marsh Wellington was built on
Local Roots

Wellington Was Built on Everglades Swamp

Wellington started as Everglades swampland, and a ride on the marsh shows you what the village looked like before the arenas. In the 1950s Charles Oliver Wellington bought about 18,000 acres of wet ground west of West Palm Beach and named it the Flying Cow Ranch, a play on his initials, C.O.W. The ranch was kept dry by an Army Corps of Engineers levee built in 1952 and 1953, according to the history of Wellington.

That levee line is part of the same system that still divides the suburbs from the Everglades today. Today Wellington is the most populous village in Florida, and the wild country on the other side of those levees looks much as it did when the ranch was drained. Out there you still find sawgrass to the horizon, tree islands, lily-pad pools and long canals.

Wellington also keeps some of that habitat close to home. The Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat and Peaceful Waters Sanctuary are good places to walk the edge of the marsh. An airboat takes you into the middle of it, where a boardwalk cannot reach.

Your captain can explain how water moves south through the levees and canals toward Everglades National Park, and why that flow shapes everything you see from the boat.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Wellington?

From Wellington, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: east to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 32 miles, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 41 miles, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Wellington and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

What You See

Wildlife You Can Expect on the Northern Marsh

Alligators and wading birds are the main event on airboat tours Wellington families take with us. We see wild American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults sunning on the banks to small ones tucked in the lily pads. They are wild animals, so we never promise a number, but this northern stretch of the Everglades is classic gator water. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has good background on the species before you go.

Birds fill in the rest. Great blue herons stalk the canal edges, great and snowy egrets work the shallows, anhingas hang their wings out to dry and white ibis move through the marsh in groups. Ospreys hunt overhead, and roseate spoonbills are a pink surprise when they show up. Turtles sun on the levee banks most days.

For airboat tours, Wellington winters line up nicely with the dry season. As water drops, wildlife gathers in the deeper channels where the boats run, and mornings are cool and clear. Riders used to early starts tend to love a sunrise tour, when the water is glassy and the birds are busiest.

For more on what lives out here, our Everglades wildlife guide covers the common species and when to see them.

Pick Your Ride

Choosing a Tour for Riders, Families and Barn Crews

Picking among airboat tours, Wellington groups usually weigh two things: who is coming and how much speed they want. Most first-time groups book our signature Everglades airboat tour, a private ride through sawgrass, canals and tree islands with stops for gators and birds. From there, a few options suit Wellington crowds especially well:

  • Junior riders and young kids: a daytime ride with bright light and easy wildlife spotting. Hearing protection is provided for everyone.
  • Grooms and working students on a day off: a fast airboat tour with full-throttle runs and slides across the sawgrass.
  • Couples and parents: a sunset ride, when the sky turns gold over the marsh.
  • Teams and sponsors: the 15-passenger boat or several private boats running together.

Night rides are another favorite once the arenas close. Our Red Eye Gator trips go out after dark with a spotlight to pick out glowing eyes along the canals, and the details are on our night airboat tours page.

Guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp, and anglers can ask about a fishing trip into water that bank fishermen never reach.

How to Book

Booking Your Private Ride From Wellington

Booking airboat tours Wellington guests take with us is a text or a phone call, not a checkout cart. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your date, the size of your group and whether you want speed, wildlife or both. He will match you with a boat, confirm the launch and send directions.

  1. Pick a day that does not clash with your show schedule or polo Sunday.
  2. Text 561-660-2419 with your group size and preferred time of day.
  3. Leave Wellington with time to spare, park at the ramp and meet your captain.

Because every tour is a private boat, the rate depends on your group, the boat and the length of the ride, so ask Captain Billy for yours directly. There are no crowd tickets and no surprise add-ons.

Read what other guests say on our reviews page, where we hold a 4.9-star Google rating, and browse more Palm Beach County options on our Palm Beach County airboat tours page. Neighbors in Royal Palm Beach and Loxahatchee make the same drive south, and our Everglades day trip guide covers planning a full day of it.

When the show season gives you a free morning, airboat tours Wellington families still talk about are one text away.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

Good to Know

Wellington Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat tours near Wellington FL?

Yes. Aces Airboat Tours runs private airboat tours Wellington guests reach by driving south to The Landing at the end of Loxahatchee Road, on the Hillsboro Canal. It is a real drive rather than a few minutes, so most guests plan a half-day. You ride your own boat into open sawgrass, canals and tree islands with a native captain.

What is the closest airboat ride to Wellington?

For most of Wellington, our closest launch is The Landing at 15490 Loxahatchee Rd in Parkland, reached by US-441 and Loxahatchee Road. Our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard takes about as long. Captain Billy confirms which ramp suits your start point and the time of day when you book.

How much is an airboat ride near Wellington?

Every Aces tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group size, the boat and how long you ride. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate. You pay for your own boat and captain, not a seat on a crowded ride.

What is the best time of year for an airboat tour?

Any time works, since gators are active year-round in South Florida. The dry season, roughly November through April, overlaps the Wellington show season and brings cool mornings and wildlife gathered in the deeper channels. Summer is green and lush, with short afternoon storms, so mornings and evenings ride best.

Can you see alligators on an airboat tour near Wellington?

Usually, yes. We see wild American alligators on the vast majority of trips, along with herons, egrets, anhingas, ibis and turtles. They are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed, but the northern Everglades marsh south of Wellington is prime gator habitat and your captain knows where they rest.

Can kids ride an airboat?

Yes. All ages are welcome, and we hand out hearing protection to everyone, including small children. Our boats are stable and the captains set the pace for the youngest guest aboard. Families with little ones usually prefer a daytime ride and a slower, wildlife-focused tour.

How long is the drive from Wellington to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Wellington, The Landing in Parkland is about 32 miles away, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Wellington?

For most Wellington guests it is The Landing in Parkland. We also launch from our Stub Canal launch, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
