The Non-Golf Day

Airboat Tours Palm Beach Gardens Golfers Book on a Rest Day

Even the most committed golfer in Palm Beach Gardens needs a day off the course, and a private airboat ride is a good one. Guests staying at PGA National Resort, members at BallenIsles, Mirasol or Old Palm and families with visitors in town all reach the same conclusion: a few hours on the open Everglades is the part of the trip people talk about at dinner.

The format suits this crowd. Every Aces tour is a private boat, booked directly with the owner, with no ticket line and no stranger in the next seat. Every seat is a front-row seat. The captain sets the pace for your group, whether that means fast runs across the sawgrass or long quiet stops beside a basking alligator.

Your captain is either Captain Billy, who has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades and built his own airboats, or Captain Bill, a naturalist with more than thirty years on this water. Both know the marsh well enough to find wildlife without a script.

Choose a two-passenger boat for a couple, an eight-passenger boat for a foursome and their partners or our 15-passenger boat for a larger party. The whole fleet is on our boats page.

Local History

From Cattle Ranch to Gardens: The Land Before the Fairways

Before the courses and gated communities, the land under Palm Beach Gardens was cattle ranches and pine forest, with swamp farther west. Magnate Harry Kelsey bought 100,000 acres that became North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Lake Park, according to the city's history.

Pieces of that older Florida survive close to home. Frenchman's Forest Natural Area and the Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area protect pine flatwoods and wetland, and Grassy Waters Preserve sits to the south. They are lovely for a walk, but they are small windows. An airboat ride shows you the scale of the wet country that once ran across this part of the state.

Out on the Water Conservation Areas, the view is sawgrass to the horizon, broken by tree islands, lily-pad pools and long canals beside the levees. Your captain can explain how the levees hold water in the conservation areas and how that water still moves south toward Everglades National Park. The Everglades restoration program is working to bring more of that natural flow back.

It is a good way to understand why South Florida looks the way it does, and why so much of it was once called the River of Grass.

Getting There

The Drive South From PGA Boulevard

Our launches are well south of Palm Beach Gardens, so it is a real drive and worth planning around traffic. The usual route is Florida's Turnpike or I-95 south to Glades Road, west to US-441 and then south toward Loxahatchee Road. From there you can reach The Landing at the end of the road on the Hillsboro Canal, or continue to our launch at the Sawgrass Expressway and Atlantic Boulevard.

The getting-here section below lists the exact miles and minutes from central Palm Beach Gardens to each ramp. Both take about the same time, so Captain Billy will steer you to whichever suits the hour and your tour.

Two plans work well:

  1. Morning ride: leave after rush hour, ride mid-morning and be back for a late lunch at Downtown at the Gardens.
  2. Evening ride: drive down after lunch, catch a sunset airboat tour and return for a late dinner near The Gardens Mall.

Bring sunglasses, a hat that will not blow off, sunscreen and a light layer. Our what to wear guide covers the details. Hearing protection is provided on every ride.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Palm Beach Gardens?

From Palm Beach Gardens, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: Florida's Turnpike or I-95 south to Glades Rd, west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 48 miles, roughly 70-80 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 50 miles, roughly 65-75 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Palm Beach Gardens and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

What You See

Wildlife on the Northern Everglades Marsh

On airboat tours Palm Beach Gardens guests take with us, wild alligators and wading birds are the headline. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, often on the canal banks in the morning sun. They are wild animals, so we never promise a number, but this northern stretch of the Everglades is classic gator country. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission covers the species in detail.

Birders get plenty too. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, white ibis and anhingas work the marsh edges. Ospreys hunt the canals, and roseate spoonbills add a flash of pink when they appear. Turtles bask on almost every sunny bank.

If birds are your main interest, our bird watching airboat tours slow down and spend more time at the rookery edges and tree islands. Photographers usually prefer early light or late light, when the sawgrass glows and the water turns to glass.

Every ride feels different because the marsh changes with the seasons. Winter brings cool, dry mornings and wildlife gathered in the deeper channels. Summer turns everything green, with short afternoon storms. Our best time to visit the Everglades guide explains what each season brings.

Tours for Couples, Foursomes and Corporate Groups

When comparing airboat tours, Palm Beach Gardens groups tend to fall into three camps, and each has a natural fit. Most first-timers start with our signature Everglades airboat tour and tailor it from there.

  • Couples: a sunset ride on a two-passenger boat, quiet and personal, with golden light across the marsh.
  • Families and foursomes: an eight-passenger boat in the morning, with plenty of time for gators and birds.
  • Company groups and conference guests: the 15-passenger boat or several private boats at once. Our corporate team building airboat tours are built for outings like these.

For more excitement, a fast airboat tour adds full-throttle runs and spins. After dark, our Red Eye Gator night tour uses a spotlight to pick out glowing eyes along the canals. Guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp, and anglers can ask about a fishing trip.

Celebrating something? Birthdays, anniversaries and bachelor or bachelorette weekends all ride well. Tell Captain Billy what the occasion is and he will plan around it.

We booked a 2 hour private tour, which seems to be the right amount of time to see everything. Very easy meeting spot at a boat landing. Our captain was fantastic and I can't say enough great things. He put us on some alligators. We will definitely be back.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!
