Local History

Your Lake Has an Everglades Back Story

Lake Clarke is a direct link to the Everglades story. According to the town's recorded history, the lake fell by roughly eight feet in 1917, the year the West Palm Beach Canal was finished. That canal was one of the early cuts meant to move water off the wet interior toward the coast, and your lakefront still shows the result.

The town's roots run back further. John Newton Clarke filed a homestead claim here in 1889, hoping to grow pineapples, and the community carries his name. Residents later voted to incorporate in 1956, partly on rumors that West Palm Beach planned to annex them.

The water that drained away was part of a much bigger system. West and south of here, the surviving marsh is now held in the Water Conservation Areas, managed by the South Florida Water Management District. That is where Aces runs. On one of our rides you see what the land around Lake Clarke looked like before the canals: sawgrass to the horizon, tree islands, lily pad pools and alligators sliding off the banks.

Captain Billy grew up with that history. He has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, lives on a homestead he built himself and can tell you how the water has changed in his lifetime. Meet him on our captains page.

The Drive

How Airboat Tours Lake Clarke Shores Families Book Work in Practice

The ride starts with a straight run south. Most Lake Clarke Shores guests leave by way of Forest Hill Boulevard, pick up I-95 or Florida's Turnpike, and follow it toward Glades Road. From there you go west to US-441 and south to Loxahatchee Road, which takes you out to The Landing at the very edge of the marsh. The getting-here section further down shows the real miles and minutes from the lakefront.

Some days the second ramp is easier. Our Sawgrass Expressway launch sits off the Atlantic Boulevard exit, and on a weekend with light traffic the Turnpike gets you there without much fuss. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting point when you book, so you never guess at the gate.

Plan it as a half day. Leave the lakefront after breakfast, ride, and you can be back on the porch by early afternoon. For more ideas on stacking a trip out west, see our Everglades day trip from West Palm Beach, which covers the same corridor you drive.

Hosting family from up north? A private ride fits neatly into a visit, because you set the start time. Neighbors in nearby Palm Springs and Lake Worth Beach make the same drive, and several of them pick a morning slot to beat the afternoon heat.

Wildlife

From Dreher Park Exhibits to Wild Gators

Plenty of local kids meet their first alligator at the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park, just up the road. The marsh is the next step: the same animals, living on their own terms, with no glass between you. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, but they are wild, so we never promise a count.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages the state's gator population, and its guidance is worth a read before any trip. On the water your captain keeps a respectful distance, cuts the engine when an animal is close and explains what it is doing.

The birds are just as good. Great blue herons stalk the canal edges, great and snowy egrets flash white against the sawgrass, anhingas spread their wings to dry and ospreys circle overhead. White ibis work the shallows in groups, and roseate spoonbills turn up often enough to keep everyone watching. Turtles bask on logs and levee banks.

Children who loved the zoo usually love this more, because they get to spot the animals themselves. If your crowd is mostly about reptiles, our alligator tours lean hardest on gator country. Birders should look at bird watching airboat tours, which slow the pace and stop longer at rookery edges and feeding flats.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Lake Clarke Shores?

From Lake Clarke Shores, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: I-95 south to Glades Rd (or the Turnpike via Forest Hill Blvd), west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 36 miles, roughly 55-65 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 42 miles, roughly 55-65 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Lake Clarke Shores and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

How Airboats Work

A Lake Person's Guide to Riding the Marsh

If you paddle or fish Lake Clarke, an airboat will feel different from anything at your dock. The hull is flat, the engine sits up high and an aircraft-style propeller pushes air instead of water. Rudders behind the prop steer the boat. That design lets it skim over sawgrass and shallow water where an outboard would tangle or ground.

Florida treats these boats seriously. The state's airboat regulations set rules for mufflers, flags and operation, and our captains run within them every trip.

A few things lake people tend to ask:

  • Noise. Airboats are loud at speed, so we hand out hearing protection to every guest, kids included.
  • Seating. Every seat is a front-row seat. There is no middle row on our boats.
  • Speed. Your captain sets the pace for your group. Families with toddlers get a gentler run; thrill seekers can ask about a fast airboat tour.
  • Spray. Usually light. A windy day or a fast spin can throw a little water, so pocket your phone.

Our fleet is small on purpose: two 8-passenger boats, four 2-passenger boats and a 15-passenger boat for bigger groups. Photos and details are on our boats page. Every one of them goes out private, carrying only the people you bring.

Picking a Time of Day for Your Ride

The best time depends on who is riding. For airboat tours, Lake Clarke Shores households tend to fall into one of these camps:

  1. Early risers pick a sunrise tour. The water is often glassy, the air is cooler and birds are busy feeding.
  2. Families with young kids choose a day tour. Bright light makes gators easier to spot, and naps stay on schedule.
  3. Couples and photographers go for a sunset tour, when the sky lights up over open marsh.
  4. Adventurous groups book the Red Eye Gator night tour, where a spotlight picks out glowing eyes along the canal.
  5. Anglers ask about Everglades fishing tours into water you cannot reach from a bank.

Season matters too. The dry months, roughly November through April, bring comfortable mornings and wildlife concentrated in deeper channels. Summer is green and lush, with afternoon storms that usually blow through. Check the National Weather Service in Miami before you leave, and look at our guide to the best time to visit the Everglades for a month-by-month view.
