Island and Marsh

From the Island of Flagler to the River of Grass

The Town of Palm Beach is a narrow ribbon of land. Its documented history notes the barrier island is never wider than three-quarters of a mile and in places only about 500 feet across. Henry Flagler turned it into a winter resort, building the Royal Poinciana Hotel in 1894, The Breakers in 1896 and Whitehall in 1902.

Flagler's guests came for ocean air, polished hotels and the Florida they could reach by rail. The wild Florida that lay to the west, the vast marsh the early settlers called the River of Grass, stayed out of view. More than a century later, that is still true for most visitors to the island.

An airboat ride closes the gap. In a single afternoon you go from the Estate Section, the shops of Worth Avenue and the manicured lawns of the North End to open sawgrass stretching to the horizon, tree islands rising out of the marsh and alligators watching from the shallows.

If you are staying at The Breakers, The Colony, The Brazilian Court or the Four Seasons, it makes an easy afternoon away from the resort and shows a side of Florida you cannot see from a lounge chair. See what a typical day looks like in our what to expect guide.

Private by Design

Why Airboat Tours Palm Beach Guests Book Are Private Only

Every Aces tour is private, which matters to island guests used to service built around them. You will never share a boat with strangers, never wait for a bus group to load and never sit in a middle seat. The captain answers to your party alone.

The fleet is deliberately small: four 2-passenger airboats, two 8-passenger airboats and one 15-passenger group boat. Every seat on every boat is a front-row seat. A couple can take a 2-passenger boat and have the marsh to themselves, and a family can fill an 8-seater without anyone looking past someone else. See the boats on our boats page.

The captains are the other half of the experience. Aces is family-owned by Captain Billy, who has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, lives on a homestead he built and hand-built his own airboats. Captain Bill brings more than thirty years as a naturalist captain. Their bios are on our captains page.

Because the time is yours, so is the itinerary: a slow drift for photographs, long engine-off pauses to listen to the marsh, or a few high-speed runs across the grass. Our private airboat tours page explains the options.

Getting There

An Honest Word About the Drive

The drive from the island is the longest part of the day, and we want you to know that before you book. You cross a bridge to West Palm Beach, take I-95 south to Glades Road, head west to US-441, then south to Loxahatchee Road and west to The Landing at its end. Our map engine shows the real miles and time below.

We also launch from the Sawgrass Expressway at the Atlantic Boulevard ramp, and Captain Billy confirms the right meeting point when you book. Most island guests use a private driver or a rideshare, and your hotel concierge is welcome to text Captain Billy on your behalf.

Why go that far instead of choosing a closer attraction? Because our launches sit on the quiet northern edge of the Everglades, beside the Water Conservation Areas and the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. There are no crowd boats or gift-shop lines, just a private boat on a huge sweep of marsh.

For a fuller plan, including timing and what to pair with the ride, read our Everglades day trip from West Palm Beach, which starts just across the lagoon from you.

Getting Here From Palm Beach

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Palm Beach?

From Palm Beach, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: cross to West Palm Beach, I-95 south to Glades Rd, west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 40 miles, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 46 miles, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Palm Beach and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Wildlife

Alligators, Spoonbills and the Quiet of the Marsh

The American alligator is the star, and we see wild gators on the vast majority of trips. On cool mornings they bask on the canal banks, and on warm afternoons they drift with only eyes and snout showing. They are wild animals, so we never promise one. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers a good primer on them.

Birdlife rivals anything on the island. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas, white ibis and ospreys are regular sightings, and roseate spoonbills appear often enough to keep everyone watching the sky. Turtles line the logs, and lily-pad pools brighten the edges of the canals.

Island residents who walk the Palm Beach Lake Trail or visit Phipps Ocean Park, home of the Little Red Schoolhouse from 1886, already know how much coastal wildlife there is. The Everglades adds a freshwater world on a far larger scale.

For a deeper look, read our Everglades wildlife guide, or ask for one of our Everglades nature tours, which slow the pace for photography and questions.

Which Ride

Choosing Airboat Tours Palm Beach Couples and Families Enjoy

The right ride depends on who is traveling and what time of day suits your plans on the island. Island guests most often choose one of these:

  • Sunset for two: a 2-passenger boat, golden light on the sawgrass and birds heading to roost. See sunset airboat tours.
  • Sunrise for photographers: glassy water, soft light and the busiest wildlife hour.
  • Daytime for families: easy spotting and a relaxed pace for children and grandparents.
  • Red Eye Gator night tour: spotlights reveal glowing eyes across the marsh.
  • Private events: milestone birthdays, corporate retreats and wedding-weekend outings on the 15-passenger boat or a small fleet. See corporate airboat tours.

Guests who use wheelchairs ride boats with a boarding ramp, and every rider gets hearing protection. If your party has a special request, from a quiet anniversary ride to a fishing trip in canals bank anglers never reach, text Captain Billy and he will tailor it.

How to Book

Arranging Your Ride From the Island

Arranging airboat tours Palm Beach guests enjoy is a personal conversation, not a web checkout. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419, or have your concierge do it, with your date, your party size and the time of day you prefer. He will recommend a boat, confirm the launch and send directions.

Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your party and the length of the ride. Ask Captain Billy for yours. During the winter season, when the island is at its busiest, a little notice helps secure the time you want.

Dress for the outdoors rather than for Worth Avenue: sunglasses, a hat that will not blow away, sunscreen and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. Our what to wear guide has details, and our guest reviews explain the 4.9-star Google rating.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

It can't get any better than this! Our captain's airboat tour was phenomenal. He knew just where to go to find the alligators, and we saw many. A truly authentic Everglades experience.

Good to Know

Palm Beach Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat tours near Palm Beach, Florida?

Yes. Aces Airboat Tours runs private Everglades airboat rides for guests staying on the island of Palm Beach. Our nearest launch is The Landing on Loxahatchee Road in Parkland. It is a real drive from the island, so most guests plan a half day around it.

Can my Palm Beach hotel concierge book an airboat tour?

Yes. A concierge can text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with the guest's date, party size and preferred time. He confirms the boat, the launch and directions, and the concierge can arrange a car to the ramp.

How much are private airboat tours Palm Beach visitors book?

Every Aces tour is a private boat, so text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate. It depends on party size, the boat and how long you want to ride. There are no shared tickets and no surprise add-ons.

Is an airboat tour worth it?

For most guests, yes. It is the fastest way to see the real Everglades up close: open sawgrass, tree islands, wading birds and, on most trips, wild alligators. A private boat makes it far more personal than a crowded park ride, which is why so many guests call it a highlight.

What should I wear on an Everglades airboat ride?

Casual layers, closed-toe shoes or secure sandals, sunglasses, a hat that stays on and sunscreen. Airboats are loud, so we provide hearing protection. On a cool winter morning, a light jacket helps because the wind on an open boat feels colder than the beach.

Do you offer airboat rides for couples?

Yes. Our 2-passenger airboats are ideal for couples, with just the two of you and the captain. A sunset ride is the most popular choice for anniversaries and special occasions. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 to plan it.

How long is the drive from Palm Beach to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Palm Beach, The Landing in Parkland is about 40 miles away, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Palm Beach?

For most Palm Beach guests it is The Landing in Parkland. We also launch from our Stub Canal launch, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
