A Tiny Town

One Street by the Sea, a Whole Marsh Out West

South Palm Beach may be the most compact town in the county. Its recorded history notes that the entire town runs about five-eighths of a mile along South Ocean Boulevard, State Road A1A, which is also its only street. Two Finnish brothers from New York first settled it in 1948, and it incorporated in 1955.

Life here faces the Atlantic on one side and the Lake Worth Lagoon on the other, with Lantana Public Beach right next door. It is a quiet place of oceanfront condominiums, and a lot of the residents spend the winter here and the summer up north.

That kind of life makes the Everglades an ideal change of scene. After weeks of ocean views, the marsh shows a completely different Florida: flat sawgrass reaching to the horizon, tree islands rising like green hills and canals reflecting enormous skies. It is the landscape most snowbirds have heard about and never actually seen up close.

An Everglades winter tour is the natural fit, since season in South Palm Beach and the best marsh weather line up almost exactly.

Season

Why Winter Is Prime Time on the Everglades

For airboat tours, South Palm Beach residents will find winter the best season, because you are here and the marsh is at its most comfortable. The dry season, roughly November through April, brings cooler mornings, lower humidity and fewer afternoon storms. Lower water also pulls wildlife into the deeper canals and pools, which helps with spotting.

Birds make winter special. Wading birds gather in big numbers, and the marsh fills with species that come south for the season, just like many of your neighbors. Expect great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas, ibis and ospreys, with roseate spoonbills a welcome surprise.

Alligators stay active year-round in South Florida. On cool winter mornings they often haul out on the banks to warm up in the sun, which makes them easier to see. We spot wild gators on the vast majority of trips, but they are wild animals and we never guarantee one.

Check the forecast with the National Weather Service Miami before you drive, and bring a light jacket for an early ride, since the wind on an open boat feels cooler than the beach. Our best time to visit the Everglades guide has more on picking a date.

Comfort First

A Gentle Ride for Every Age

Yes, an airboat ride can be gentle, and on a private Aces boat the pace is entirely up to you. Many of the guests on airboat tours South Palm Beach sends our way are retirees, and plenty of them tell Captain Billy up front that they want a slow, scenic ride with lots of stops and no wild spins. That is an easy request.

Our boats are stable on the flat marsh water, and every seat is a front-row seat, so nobody twists around to see. Hearing protection is handed out on every ride because airboat engines are loud. Guests who use wheelchairs ride our ramp-equipped boats; read the details on our accessible airboat tours page.

Your captain will cut the engine at the good spots so you can sit in the quiet, listen to the birds and take photos without rushing. Owner Captain Billy has more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, and Captain Bill has over thirty as a naturalist captain. Questions about tree islands, sawgrass or how the water moves are always welcome. Meet them on our captains page.

When the grandkids visit, the same boat can pick up the pace for them, then slow back down for everyone else.

Getting Here From South Palm Beach

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From South Palm Beach?

From South Palm Beach, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: I-95 or Florida's Turnpike south to Glades Rd, west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west to the end of the road.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 33 miles, roughly 55-65 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 39 miles, roughly 55-65 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central South Palm Beach and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

When Family Visits

Planning Airboat Tours South Palm Beach Visitors Will Love

When children and grandchildren fly in for the holidays or spring break, a private airboat ride is one of the easiest outings to plan from South Palm Beach. It is outdoors, everyone sits together and nobody needs to be an athlete. Kids get alligators and speed, adults get scenery and a captain who loves to talk about the marsh.

Here is how visiting families usually pick:

  1. Day tour for mixed ages and small children. See day airboat tours.
  2. Sunset tour for adults who want golden light and a dinner reservation afterward.
  3. Night tour for teenagers who want to find glowing gator eyes with a spotlight.
  4. Bird watching for the photographer in the family. See bird watching airboat tours.

A big family can ride the 15-passenger boat together or split between two 8-passenger boats. Couples who want the marsh to themselves can take one of our 2-passenger airboats. Browse the whole fleet on our boats page.

Getting There

The Drive West From A1A

Before booking airboat tours, South Palm Beach guests should know the drive to our launches is a real one, and it helps to plan it that way. Cross from A1A to the mainland, take I-95 or Florida's Turnpike south to Glades Road, head west to US-441, then south to Loxahatchee Road and follow it west to The Landing at the end of the road. Our map engine lists exact miles and times below.

Another launch at the Sawgrass Expressway and Atlantic Boulevard ramp can be handy depending on the day. Captain Billy confirms where you meet when you book.

The reason to go this far is the place itself. Our launches sit at the northern edge of the River of Grass, beside the Water Conservation Areas and near the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. It is quieter and less commercial than the Tamiami Trail parks south of Miami, which matters to guests who want space and calm.

Many seasonal residents pair the trip with lunch on the way home. For ideas on structuring the day, see our Everglades day trip from Boca Raton, which follows much the same route.

How to Book

Booking Is a Phone Call

Booking with Aces works the old-fashioned way, which most South Palm Beach residents appreciate. There is no online checkout. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419, tell him your date, how many are coming and any mobility needs, and he will suggest the right boat and confirm the meeting point.

Every tour is private, so the rate depends on your group and how long you ride. Ask Captain Billy for yours directly. Seasonal weeks fill up, so a call a little ahead of your preferred date helps, especially around the holidays.

Bring sunglasses, a hat that stays put, sunscreen and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. Our frequently asked questions page covers the rest, and our reviews show why Aces holds a 4.9-star Google rating. Many airboat tours South Palm Beach guests take become a yearly tradition when the family comes down.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!

What an absolute amazing experience! Our captain is one of the most experienced men in the Everglades. We explored the wildlife including up to 30 alligators, several species of birds, frogs and fish. Well worth it, and you get a private party instead of being with strangers.

Called Captain Bill at 9 AM and asked if he could do a 10 AM run. He said yes and met me right on time. We saw two alligators, a pink spoonbill and numerous herons. If you want the real Everglades with someone who actually lives in them, book Captain Bill. Highly recommended.
