Why Aces

Airboat Tours Palm Springs Families Can Fit Into a Weekend

First, the obvious: this is the village of Palm Springs in central Palm Beach County, Florida, not the desert town in California. Here the nearest wilderness is wet, green and full of alligators, and it starts closer than most neighbors realize.

For working families, the hardest part of any outing is the schedule. Aces makes that easier because every tour is a private boat. You pick the start time, your captain sets the pace for your kids and nobody waits on a crowd boat to fill. Grandparents, toddlers and teenagers all ride in front-row seats, with no middle row on any of our boats.

The boats come in three sizes: two 8-passenger airboats, four 2-passenger airboats and one 15-passenger boat for reunions and birthday crowds. Families of four or five usually ride one of the 8-seaters. See them all on our boats page.

Aces is family-owned. Captain Billy, the owner, has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades and still answers the phone. Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on this water, rides with guests too. You can read about both on our captains page. When you text, the reply comes from the people who will actually take you out.

Local History

From Guernsey Pastures to a Busy Village

Palm Springs did not begin as suburbs. The land here was dairy country first. William A. Boutwell's operation grew to about 700 acres and more than 1,000 Guernsey cattle, and the former dairy barn on Henthorne Drive dates from that era. When the village was chartered in 1957 as the county's 30th municipality, it held farmland, that barn and no permanent residents, according to the village's recorded history.

It filled in quickly. Neighborhoods grew around the original townsite and its chain of lakes, the Congress Avenue Subdistrict took shape and annexation kept adding streets. The population climbed from 18,928 in 2010 to 26,890 in 2020.

Go back further and the whole coastal ridge sat beside a vast wetland that drained slowly south. Canals, farms and towns pushed it west. What survives on the northern side is the Water Conservation Areas, a managed stretch of original marsh, and the long effort to restore water flow through the system is tracked by the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

That surviving marsh is where we run. Ride out with Captain Billy and you see the country that existed long before any pasture: sawgrass, tree islands, lily pad pools and gators on the banks.

Getting There

How Far Is the Everglades From Palm Springs, FL?

It is a single straight trip, mostly highway. From the Forest Hill Boulevard or Congress Avenue side of the village, get on Florida's Turnpike or I-95 and head south toward Glades Road. Go west to US-441, then south to Loxahatchee Road and follow it to The Landing, where the pavement stops at the marsh.

The other option is our ramp off the Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Boulevard. Captain Billy tells you which one fits your day, and he confirms the meeting spot when you book. Real miles and drive minutes from the village are in the getting-here section below.

A few tips from families who have made the trip:

  • Leave a cushion for weekday traffic near Glades Road.
  • Pack snacks and water in the car; the ramps are at the edge of the marsh, not next to a food court.
  • Fill the tank before you head west on Loxahatchee Road.
  • Use the restroom before you board.

No car that day? A rideshare works; just plan the return ride ahead. For more on the corridor, our Everglades day trip from West Palm Beach covers the same route. Neighbors next door can find their own page under Lake Clarke Shores airboat tours.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Palm Springs?

From Palm Springs, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: Florida's Turnpike or I-95 south to Glades Rd, west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 35 miles, roughly 55-65 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 40 miles, roughly 55-65 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Palm Springs and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Tour Options

Matching the Ride to Your Crew

Every group is different, so here is a quick way to choose. When planning airboat tours, Palm Springs parents usually start with the ages in the car and how much speed everyone can handle.

Who is ridingBest fitWhy it works
Toddlers and grade-schoolersDay tourBright light for spotting gators, home in time for naps
Teens who want thrillsFast tourFull-throttle runs and spins across open sawgrass
Parents on a night outSunset tourGolden light, calmer air, great photos
Brave older kidsRed Eye Gator night tourSpotlight on glowing eyes after dark
Big family gatheringsGroup tourThe 15-passenger boat or several boats together

Birthdays work well on the water. A kids birthday airboat tour turns the party into an expedition, and the guest of honor sits up front. Grandparents who use a wheelchair can ride on boats fitted with a boarding ramp.

Still not sure? Send Captain Billy a text with your group's ages and he will give you a straight recommendation.

What the Kids Will Spot From the Boat

Kids spot more than adults, every time. On airboat tours, Palm Springs children tend to call out the first gator before the captain does. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults on the bank to small ones tucked into lily pads. They are wild, so we never promise a number.

The National Park Service's alligator guide is a good read before you go. It explains how gators shape the marsh by digging holes that hold water in the dry season, which gives kids something to look for.

Here is a short spotting list to hand the kids:

  1. An alligator with only its eyes and nose above water.
  2. A great blue heron standing perfectly still.
  3. A white egret, great or snowy.
  4. An anhinga drying its wings on a branch.
  5. A turtle sunning on a log.
  6. A pink roseate spoonbill, the hardest one to find.

School breaks and long weekends are popular times to come out, so text early for those dates. Our Everglades wildlife guide has more on each animal.

Booking, Rates and What to Bring

Booking happens by text or phone. Send Captain Billy a message at 561-660-2419 with your date, group size and preferred time. He matches you with a boat, confirms the ramp and sends directions. You do not need an account or an app.

Because each ride is private, the rate depends on the boat and the tour length. Ask Captain Billy for yours. There are no crowd tickets, so you only pay for your own group's boat.

For the ride itself, bring:

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A hat with a strap or one you can hold
  • Closed shoes or secure sandals
  • A light jacket for sunrise, sunset or winter rides
  • A zip bag for phones

We provide hearing protection for everyone, including small children. Our what to wear guide covers the rest, and the FAQ answers the usual first-timer questions.

Families from the village often tell us the personal touch is what they remember. Read their stories on our reviews page, where we hold a 4.9-star Google rating. When the calendar opens up, airboat tours Palm Springs neighbors recommend are a single text away.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!
