The Outing Visiting Grandkids Talk About

Seasonal residents in North Palm Beach know the routine: the grandkids arrive, the pool is great for a day, and then everyone needs a plan. An airboat ride is the outing they still mention at Thanksgiving. It is loud, a little wild and completely unlike anything at home.

We are honest about the trip. Our launches are at the southern end of Palm Beach County, so the ride begins with a solid drive south. Most hosts make it a half-day plan: leave after breakfast, ride mid-morning, stop for lunch on the way back and be home before the afternoon heat. The getting-here section below shows the measured miles and minutes from the village to each launch.

Every tour is a private boat, which matters with mixed ages. The captain slows down for grandma, opens it up for the teenagers and stops whenever a six-year-old spots something in the lily pads. All ages ride, and everyone gets hearing protection, including the littlest guests.

If the group is big, the 15-passenger boat carries three generations at once. Our group airboat tours page explains how larger families ride together, and kids birthday airboat tours work well when a visit lines up with a birthday.

Local Roots

From Mangrove Swamp to Model Village

North Palm Beach was built on wetlands, which makes an Everglades ride a natural history lesson for residents. In 1954 John D. MacArthur bought 2,600 acres here and developed the village on former mangrove swamp and farmland, according to the village's history. Two years later the National Association of Home Builders named it the best planned community of 1956.

Some of the old character survives. Sir Harry Oakes' castle-like home on US-1 became the North Palm Beach Country Club clubhouse, and the nearby state park carries the MacArthur name to this day.

The Everglades shows you what much of South Florida looked like before villages like this one. Sawgrass marsh, tree islands and slow-moving water once covered a huge share of the region. The part you ride, in the Water Conservation Areas west of the suburbs, is a managed remnant of that original River of Grass.

Restoration of the wider system is one of the largest environmental projects in the country, and the Everglades restoration program explains how water is being sent south again. Your captain can point out the levees, canals and structures that move that water as you ride past them.

Planning Airboat Tours North Palm Beach Boaters Enjoy

If you keep a boat at Old Port Cove or along the Lake Worth Lagoon, an airboat will surprise you. It has a flat hull with nothing below the waterline, an aircraft-style propeller up top and big air rudders behind it. There is no draft to worry about, no prop to foul and no channel markers to follow. The boat simply skims over water a few inches deep.

Many airboat tours North Palm Beach boaters book with us turn into an hour of questions for the captain: how he steers without a keel, how he reads the sawgrass, how the boat slides on a turn. Ask away. Captain Billy hand-built his own airboats, and Captain Bill has run this water for more than thirty years.

Florida treats airboats as their own category, with specific equipment rules set out in the state's airboat regulations. Our captains know them inside out.

For the full sensation, book a fast airboat tour with open runs across the marsh, or try airboat drifting tours for controlled slides that seasoned boaters always want to try once.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From North Palm Beach?

From North Palm Beach, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: I-95 or Florida's Turnpike south to Glades Rd, west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 50 miles, roughly 75-85 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Wildlife

What the Marsh Holds

The northern Everglades is some of the best alligator country in South Florida. We see wild American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from large adults basking on the banks to young ones among the lily pads. They are wild animals, so we never promise.

Bird lovers from the village, many of whom already walk Anchorage Park or MacArthur Beach, will find a very different cast out here. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, white ibis, anhingas and ospreys are regulars. Roseate spoonbills turn up when conditions are right. In the cooler months the marsh fills with wintering birds, which suits seasonal residents perfectly.

Turtles bask along the canal banks, and tree islands, called hammocks, rise from the sawgrass like islands of shade. On calm mornings the water turns to glass and reflects the clouds.

Our bird watching airboat tours give birders more time at each stop. For a primer before you go, read our where to see alligators in South Florida article.

Season by Season From the Village

The best season for most North Palm Beach residents is the one when they are in town, and the marsh rewards every one of them. Winter and spring, roughly November through April, are the dry season: comfortable air, lower water and wildlife concentrated in the deeper channels. That lines up neatly with snowbird season and holiday visits.

Summer brings tall green sawgrass, warm mornings and afternoon storms that build and pass quickly. Early rides and evening rides are the move. Fall is quieter on the roads and pleasant on the water.

Each season has its own page: winter tours, spring tours and fall tours explain what changes on the marsh. For the day's forecast, check the National Weather Service in Miami before you leave.

Whatever the month, airboat tours North Palm Beach families plan in the morning tend to catch the calmest water and the busiest birds.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

North Palm Beach Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat tours near North Palm Beach?

There are no airboat launches in the village, since its waters are the lagoon and the ocean. The closest private airboat tours North Palm Beach residents can book run from Aces launches on the northern edge of the Everglades. It is a real drive south, best planned as a half-day outing.

Is an airboat tour good for grandkids?

Yes. All ages ride, every guest gets hearing protection and the captain sets the pace around your youngest passenger. Daytime tours suit small children best, while teenagers usually love a faster ride. Tell Captain Billy the ages when you book.

How much is a private airboat tour?

Every Aces tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on how many are in your group, which boat you need and how long you ride. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate.

Can airboats tip over?

Airboats are wide, flat and very stable on shallow marsh water, and our captains have decades of experience reading it. Guests stay seated while the boat moves and follow the captain's instructions. If conditions are poor, the captain simply changes the plan.

Which month is best for an Everglades airboat ride?

November through April, the dry season, is the favorite because the air is comfortable and wildlife gathers in the deeper water. Gators are active year-round, though, and summer mornings are lush and green. Pick the month your family is in town.

Where is the best seat on an airboat?

On an Aces boat, every seat is a front-row seat, so nobody gets stuck behind someone else. The fleet has no middle rows. Couples can even book a 2-passenger airboat to have the view entirely to themselves.

How long is the drive from North Palm Beach to an Aces airboat launch?

From central North Palm Beach, The Landing in Parkland is about 50 miles away, roughly 75-85 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.
