Two Kinds of Reptile

From Loggerhead Nests to Alligator Banks

Juno Beach is sea-turtle country, and the Everglades is alligator country, so a family who loves one tends to love the other. The numbers here are remarkable. In 2023 the Loggerhead Marinelife Center recorded 25,025 sea turtle nests on its 9.5-mile stretch of beach, according to the town's profile.

Out on the marsh, the reptiles are freshwater ones. American alligators bask on the levee banks and drift through lily-pad pools, while turtles stack up on logs along the canals. We see gators on the vast majority of trips. They are wild, so we never promise, but the northern Everglades rarely lets a family down.

Kids who have just learned how a hatchling finds the ocean usually have a hundred questions about gators. How long do they live? How many eggs? Why do they open their mouths in the sun? Your captain will answer every one. The National Park Service alligator page makes a good warm-up read in the car.

Many airboat tours Juno Beach families take with us happen on a cloudy day, when the sand is less tempting and the marsh is at its best.

Honest Distance

How Far Is the Everglades From Juno Beach?

The Everglades is a genuine road trip from Juno Beach, and we would rather you plan for it than be surprised. The town sits near the top of Palm Beach County, while our launches sit at its southern edge along the Broward line. The route runs south on I-95 or Florida's Turnpike, then west toward the marsh.

The getting-here section below lists measured miles and minutes from central Juno Beach to each launch. Traffic matters more than distance on this trip, so timing is everything, and the airboat tours Juno Beach guests enjoy most start outside rush hour.

  • Best: leave after the morning rush and ride mid-morning, then lunch on the way home.
  • Also good: leave after an early beach walk and catch a sunset airboat tour, driving home after dark.
  • Avoid: weekday departures right at rush hour in either direction.

Staying in an A1A condo rental or a small oceanfront hotel along US-1? Rideshare works, but for a trip this long most guests prefer their own car. Captain Billy will confirm which launch is simplest for your plans when you text or call 561-660-2419.

Best Airboat Tours Juno Beach Kids Will Love

For families coming down from Juno, the best tour is the one that fits your kids' energy and your schedule. Here is how we usually match them:

  1. Day tours suit little ones best: bright light, easy spotting and a reasonable drive home. See day airboat tours.
  2. Sunrise tours are for early risers, the same crew who already gets up for turtle-season beach walks.
  3. Red Eye Gator night tours use a spotlight to find glowing gator eyes, a thrill for older kids. See night airboat tours.
  4. Nature tours slow the pace, with long engine-off stops for birds and turtles. See Everglades nature tours.

Every tour is a private boat, and every seat is a front-row seat, so nobody stares at the back of a head. All ages are welcome, and we hand out hearing protection to everyone.

For a celebration, a kids birthday airboat tour turns a visit into a party the guest of honor will brag about at school.

Local Roots

A Town Named for a Goddess

Juno Beach has a bigger history than its small size suggests. The settlement was named after the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter, as a sister settlement to its neighbor to the north. In the late 1800s nearby Juno even served as the seat of what was then Dade County, back when that county stretched far up the coast.

In those days, the land west of the coastal ridge was wet, wild and nearly roadless. Much of South Florida drained slowly south toward Florida Bay through the sawgrass of the Everglades, a system the Everglades National Park still protects at its southern end.

The marsh you ride with Aces sits at the northern side of that system, in the Water Conservation Areas west of the Broward and Palm Beach suburbs. It is open, quiet and far from the crowds on the Tamiami Trail.

Your guide is part of the story too. Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades and built his own airboats. Captain Bill brings more than thirty years as a naturalist captain. Ask either of them how the marsh has changed.

What You See

Birds, Sky and Open Water

Beyond the gators, the marsh is a bird show. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, white ibis and anhingas work the shallow edges, ospreys hunt overhead and roseate spoonbills appear when conditions line up. Visitors who walk the Juno Dunes Natural Area will recognize a few faces and meet plenty of new ones.

The landscape is the other half of the experience. Sawgrass runs flat to the horizon, tree islands rise like green rafts and lily-pad pools open between them. With nothing taller than a cypress around, the sky becomes huge, and the clouds over the marsh in late afternoon are something to photograph.

Pier anglers should know we run Everglades fishing tours into freshwater spots that bank fishermen never reach. It is a very different game from casting off the Juno Beach Pier, and one of the airboat tours Juno Beach anglers ask about most.

Gators are active all year. The dry season, roughly November through April, brings cooler air and wildlife gathered in the deeper channels, while summer offers green marsh and quick afternoon storms. Our Everglades wildlife guide covers what to expect by season.

We booked a 2 hour private tour, which seems to be the right amount of time to see everything. Very easy meeting spot at a boat landing. Our captain was fantastic and I can't say enough great things. He put us on some alligators. We will definitely be back.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!

What an absolute amazing experience! Our captain is one of the most experienced men in the Everglades. We explored the wildlife including up to 30 alligators, several species of birds, frogs and fish. Well worth it, and you get a private party instead of being with strangers.

Good to Know

Juno Beach Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat tours in Juno Beach?

No, Juno Beach has no airboat marsh; its water is the Atlantic. The nearest private airboat tours Juno Beach guests can book run from Aces launches on the northern edge of the Everglades, a long drive south. Plan a half day for the round trip.

Do you see sea turtles on an Everglades airboat tour?

No, sea turtles live in the ocean. On the marsh you see freshwater turtles basking on logs and canal banks, plus American alligators, herons, egrets and anhingas. It pairs well with a sea-turtle vacation because kids get to compare two very different reptile worlds.

How much is an airboat tour from Juno Beach?

Every Aces tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group size, the boat and the length of the ride. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate. There is no shared crowd boat.

Is an airboat tour worth the drive from northern Palm Beach County?

Most families say yes. There is no airboat marsh in the north county, and a private boat with a native captain shows you wildlife and open sawgrass you cannot see anywhere near the coast. Plan the timing around traffic and it becomes an easy half-day trip.

Are airboat rides safe for kids?

Yes. Our boats are stable, our captains have decades on this water and every guest gets hearing protection, including small children. The pace is set around your youngest passenger. Families with little ones usually choose a daytime ride.

Can you see alligators at night on an airboat?

Yes. Our Red Eye Gator night tours use a spotlight, and alligator eyes reflect it as bright orange points across the water. Sightings are never guaranteed because gators are wild, but night rides are a favorite with older kids and teens.

How long is the drive from Juno Beach to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Juno Beach, The Landing in Parkland is about 56 miles away, roughly 75-85 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Juno Beach?

For most Juno Beach guests it is The Landing in Parkland. We also launch from our Stub Canal launch, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
