Honest Distance

Airboat Tours Jupiter Families Plan as a Road Trip

Jupiter sits at the far north end of Palm Beach County, and our launches sit at its southern edge, so an airboat ride from here is a genuine road trip. We would rather say that up front than pretend it is around the corner. Families who plan it well call it one of the best days of their vacation.

The trick is to treat the drive as part of the outing. Leave after the morning rush, ride mid-morning when the wildlife is active and stop for lunch on the way home. Or head south after the beach, catch a sunset airboat tour and drive back to Harbourside Place for a late dinner. The getting-here section below shows the honest miles and minutes from central Jupiter to each ramp.

Why make the trip at all? Because there is no airboat marsh in Jupiter. The local waters are rivers, the inlet and the ocean. The wide-open sawgrass of the Everglades starts much farther south, and that is where Aces runs private boats with native captains.

Families from Abacoa, Jupiter Farms and Egret Landing who have made the drive tell us the same thing: the private boat, the alligators and the quiet of the marsh made it worth the miles.

Two Kinds of Wild

From the Loxahatchee River to the River of Grass

Jupiter already has a famous wild river, and the Everglades is a completely different kind of wild. The Loxahatchee River here is Florida's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, according to the river's history. Paddling it from Riverbend Park means cypress, tannin-dark water and a narrow channel overhead.

The northern Everglades is the opposite. Instead of a winding river under trees, you get sawgrass running flat to the horizon, open sky and long canals beside the levees. Tree islands rise like green rafts out of the marsh. Lily-pad pools open up between them. An airboat, with its flat hull and aircraft-style propeller, is the only practical way to cross that much shallow water quickly.

Local history ties the two together. Jupiter's name comes from a mapmaker's misreading of Jobe or Hobe, the native people who lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River. The same name, Loxahatchee, now marks a road and a national wildlife refuge at the top of the Everglades, where one of our launches sits.

If you have walked Jonathan Dickinson State Park or the Jupiter Ridge Natural Area, an airboat ride completes the picture of South Florida's wet country. Your captain will explain how water moves south through the Water Conservation Areas toward Everglades National Park.

Fit It Into Your Trip

Spring Training, Beach Days and a Morning on the Marsh

For airboat tours, Jupiter visitors usually fit the ride around something else, and the schedule bends easily. Spring training families at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium often pick an off day or a morning before a night game. Beach visitors staying near Jupiter Beach Park pick a cloudy day, when the sand is less inviting and the marsh is at its best.

Here is how a typical day runs:

  1. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your date and group size.
  2. He confirms the launch, the meeting time and directions.
  3. Drive south, park at the ramp and meet your captain.
  4. Ride your private boat into the marsh, with stops for gators and birds.
  5. Drive home with time for an afternoon at the beach or a game.

If your kids love an early start, a sunrise tour catches glassy water, cool air and the busiest bird activity. If your crew prefers excitement, a fast airboat tour adds full-throttle runs and slides across the sawgrass.

Visiting grandparents are welcome too. Guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp, as explained on our accessible airboat tours page.

Getting Here From Jupiter

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Jupiter?

From Jupiter, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: I-95 or Florida's Turnpike south to US-441/SR-7 via Glades Rd, then Loxahatchee Rd west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 59 miles, roughly 75-85 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 60 miles, roughly 75-85 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Jupiter and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Why Aces

Your Own Boat, Your Own Captain

The biggest reason to choose Aces for airboat tours, Jupiter guests tell us, is that every tour is a private boat, so the day is built around your family rather than a crowd. Every seat is a front-row seat, with no middle row and nobody standing in front of you. The captain stops when your kids spot something, slows down for grandma and opens it up for the teenagers.

Aces is family-owned. Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, lives on a homestead he built and hand-built his own airboats. He also answers the phone. Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on this water, shares the driving and loves the questions most guides wave off.

The fleet is small by design: two-passenger airboats for couples, eight-passenger boats for families and a 15-passenger boat for big groups. Neighbors from Admirals Cove or Jupiter Inlet Colony who want to go out together can fill the larger boat or run several boats side by side. See every one on our boats page.

Other guests explain it better than we do. Read their stories on our reviews page, where Aces holds a 4.9-star Google rating, and look through the photo gallery for a feel of the marsh.

What You See

Gators, Wading Birds and Big Sky

Alligators are the reason most Jupiter families make the trip, and the northern Everglades rarely disappoints. We see wild American alligators on the vast majority of airboat tours Jupiter guests take with us, from big adults on the banks to babies tucked into the lily pads. They are wild, so we never promise. The National Park Service alligator page is a great primer for kids before the ride.

The birds are a close second. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, white ibis and anhingas work the edges of the marsh. Ospreys hunt overhead, turtles bask on the canal banks and roseate spoonbills turn up when conditions are right. Our bird watching airboat tours give birders more time at each stop.

Then there is the sky. With no buildings or trees in the way, clouds pile up over the sawgrass, and the light at sunrise and sunset is something you will want photos of.

Gators are active all year in South Florida. The dry season, roughly November through April, brings cooler days and wildlife gathered in the deeper water. The National Weather Service in Miami has the day's forecast.

How to Book

How Jupiter Guests Book a Private Ride

Booking is a text or a call to Captain Billy at 561-660-2419. Tell him your date, the size of your group, the ages of any kids and whether you want wildlife, speed or both. He will match you with a boat and a launch and send directions. Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group and the length of the ride. Ask him for yours directly.

Because the drive is longer from Jupiter, a few tips help:

  • Book a mid-morning or late-afternoon start to miss rush hour on I-95 and the Turnpike.
  • Pack water, snacks, sunscreen and a light layer for the car and the boat.
  • Read our what to expect on an Everglades airboat tour guide with the kids.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!
