For Delray Birders

From the Wakodahatchee Boardwalk to the Open Marsh

If you have walked the boardwalk at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, you already know the birds. An airboat ride takes you to the place they came from: the open Everglades marsh, where wading birds spread across miles of sawgrass instead of a few acres of ponds.

On a typical morning out of The Landing we pass great blue herons stalking the canal edges, great and snowy egrets, white ibis working the shallows and anhingas drying their wings on snags. Ospreys hunt overhead, and roseate spoonbills show up often enough to make birders bring a longer lens. The difference from a boardwalk is scale and quiet. When the captain cuts the engine beside a tree island, there is no foot traffic and no other group.

Birders get the most from a slower, private ride. Our bird watching airboat tours leave room to idle, reposition for light and wait out a heron that is about to strike. Ask Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years here, about nesting season and where the birds roost at dusk.

Gators share the same water. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults on the banks to small ones tucked in the lily pads, but they are wild, so we never promise. The National Park Service alligator guide explains why they matter so much to the whole system.

The Drive

How Far Is the Everglades From Delray Beach?

The Everglades begins only a short drive inland from Delray Beach, at the western edge of the suburbs where the marsh is held inside the Water Conservation Areas. Aces launches on that northern edge of the River of Grass, and the closest ramp for Delray is The Landing at 15490 Loxahatchee Road in Parkland.

From the beach or downtown, drive west on Atlantic Avenue past Old School Square and I-95, or take Clint Moore Road from the north end of town. Both reach US-441, also called State Road 7. Turn south, then west on Loxahatchee Road to the ramp. West Delray neighborhoods such as Kings Point already sit close to US-441, so their drive is the shortest. The real miles and drive times are in the getting-here section below.

Many Delray visitors assume the Everglades means a long run down to the Tamiami Trail south of Miami. That stretch has its own big parks, but the northern Everglades is far closer to Palm Beach County and much quieter on the water. You will share the marsh with birds, not with a line of tour boats.

Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book, and if another of our three launches suits your plans better, he will say so. For more on choosing where and when to go, read our guide on where to see alligators in South Florida.

Sunset and Night

Airboat Tours Delray Beach Couples Plan Around Atlantic Avenue

The airboat tours Delray Beach couples book most are timed around the evening on Atlantic Avenue. A late-afternoon ride ends at golden hour, and the drive back east puts you downtown in time for dinner and the street at its liveliest.

Our sunset airboat tours run when the light turns the sawgrass gold and the birds fly in to roost. A two-passenger boat makes it a private outing for two, with a captain who knows when to stop talking and let the sky do the work. For an anniversary or a proposal, tell Captain Billy in advance and he will help you plan the moment.

Night owls have another option. Our Red Eye Gator night airboat tours head out after dark with a spotlight, and alligator eyes glow red across the water. It is a very different marsh at night: frogs, insects, the odd splash and a sky with far less city glow than the coast.

Delray has always drawn people looking for something with more character. In 1935 and 1936, during the town's Artists and Writers Colony era, the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived here, according to Delray Beach's history. Photographers and painters who visit today find the marsh at dusk worth the drive. Browse our trip gallery to see the light for yourself.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Delray Beach?

From Delray Beach, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: west on Atlantic Ave or Clint Moore Rd to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 22 miles, roughly 40-50 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 28 miles, roughly 40-50 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Delray Beach and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Family Days

West Delray Retirees and Visiting Grandkids

For West Delray residents, an airboat ride is one of the easiest ways to give visiting family a true Florida day. Grandparents from Kings Point and the communities along US-441 are already close to the launch, and a private boat means the pace is set for your group, not for a crowd.

Here is how a typical family morning works:

  1. Text Captain Billy with the ages in your group and any mobility needs.
  2. Pick a morning time, when the light is good and the air is still cool.
  3. Meet at the ramp, hand out the hearing protection we provide, and take your seats. Every seat is a front-row seat.
  4. Ride out for gators, birds and turtles, with stops whenever someone spots something.

Small children ride with everyone else, and our boats are stable with plenty of room. Guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp; details are on our accessible airboat tours page. A birthday in the family can become a kids birthday airboat tour.

Families who bring a bigger crowd can fill our 15-passenger boat or spread across several private boats with group airboat tours. Everyone stays together, and nobody gets stuck behind a stranger.

Plan Your Day

A Beach Morning, a Marsh Afternoon

Delray makes it easy to see both sides of South Florida in one day. Travel Holiday magazine once named Delray Municipal Beach the top beach in the southeastern United States, so start there with an early swim, then head inland after lunch for a private ride on the marsh.

Best season. Alligators are active year-round. The dry season, roughly November through April, brings lower water that concentrates wildlife and comfortable temperatures that suit winter visitors. Summer means a deep green marsh and afternoon storms, so book mornings or evenings. The National Weather Service Miami has the local forecast, and our best time to visit the Everglades guide goes month by month.

What to bring. Sunglasses, a hat that will not blow off, sunscreen, light layers and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. Swap the beach bag for a small zip bag for your phone.

Will you get wet? Usually not much. A fast tour or a windy day can bring some spray, but a relaxed ride rarely does.

For more ideas nearby, airboat tours Delray Beach visitors pair well with the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens on the drive out, since it sits in West Delray, inland from the beach.

How to Book

Booking a Private Ride From Delray

Booking starts with a text or call to Captain Billy at 561-660-2419. Tell him your date, how many people are coming and what you most want to see, birds, gators, sunset or speed, and he will pick the right boat and confirm your launch. Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group and the length of the ride; ask him for yours.

There is no checkout page and no call center. Captain Billy answers his own phone, which is why guests often mention the easy planning in their reviews, where we hold a 4.9-star Google rating. You can meet both captains on our captains page.

Our captain was the best! We live in South Florida and bring guests all the time. By far the most fun. I loved the fast paths and the way we went side to side.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

Good to Know

Delray Beach Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat rides near Delray Beach?

Yes. The closest Everglades airboat rides to Delray Beach launch from The Landing on Loxahatchee Road in Parkland, a short drive west and south via Atlantic Avenue and US-441. Aces runs private boats there into the northern Everglades for alligators, wading birds and open sawgrass.

Is Wakodahatchee Wetlands part of the Everglades?

No. Wakodahatchee is a local wetland park in West Delray, separate from the Everglades marsh, though it draws many of the same birds. For the open River of Grass with tree islands, canals and wild gators, an airboat ride on the northern Everglades is the next step west.

What birds can you see on an airboat tour?

Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, white ibis, anhingas and ospreys are regulars. Roseate spoonbills appear on some trips, and the cooler months bring more wintering birds. A slower private ride makes it easier to stop and watch. Ask for a bird watching tour if birds are your priority.

How much is an airboat tour near Delray Beach?

Every Aces tour is a private boat, so text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate. It depends on your group size, the boat and how long you ride. You will not find crowd tickets or extra charges at the dock.

Is a sunset or night airboat tour better for couples?

Both work well. A sunset tour gives golden light, roosting birds and an easy dinner on Atlantic Avenue afterward. A night tour is more of an adventure, with a spotlight picking out glowing gator eyes. Many couples choose sunset for a first ride and come back for the night tour.

Are airboat rides safe for seniors?

Yes. Our boats are stable, captains are experienced and the pace is set for your group. Hearing protection is provided, and guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp. Share any mobility needs when you book so Captain Billy can plan the right boat for airboat tours Delray Beach seniors take with family.

How long is the drive from Delray Beach to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Delray Beach, The Landing in Parkland is about 22 miles away, roughly 40-50 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Delray Beach?

For most Delray Beach guests it is The Landing in Parkland. We also launch from our Stub Canal launch, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
