Local Roots

The Everglades Starts at Boynton's Back Door

Boynton Beach lives closer to the Everglades than almost any coastal city in the county. Just west of town, past the Lee Road entrance, lies the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, a protected piece of the northern Everglades. Aces launches a little farther south along that same wild edge of the Glades.

People have lived beside this marsh for a very long time. A mound complex west of the city, near the refuge, has yielded pottery shards possibly dating to 150 BCE, according to Boynton Beach history. The town itself is much younger: it is named for Nathan Boynton, a Civil War major who settled the area in 1895.

What has not changed is the marsh. Sawgrass still runs to the horizon, tree islands rise out of it like green ships, and the canals beside the levees hold some of the best alligator water in South Florida. We see wild gators on the vast majority of trips, along with herons, egrets, anhingas, ibis and turtles. They are wild, so we never promise a number.

For many West Boynton residents, the Everglades is something they drive past on the way to somewhere else. A private ride with Captain Billy, who has spent more than sixty years in and around these marshes, is how you finally see what is out there.

For Birders

Green Cay Birders: The Next Step Is the Open Marsh

If Green Cay Wetlands is your regular morning walk, an airboat ride is the logical next step. Green Cay shows you wading birds up close on a few protected ponds. The northern Everglades shows you the same birds spread across a landscape that stretches for miles.

On a slow private ride you can expect great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, white ibis, anhingas, ospreys and, on good days, roseate spoonbills. Winter brings the most variety, which is also when most snowbirds in Valencia, Canyon Lakes and the other West Boynton communities are in town.

An airboat reaches water no boardwalk can. The flat hull slides over shallow marsh, and the aircraft-style propeller pushes the boat where a regular hull would stall. When the captain cuts the engine beside a tree island, the marsh goes quiet and the birds go back to feeding.

Birders should ask for our bird watching airboat tours, which leave time to idle and wait for the shot. Captain Bill, a naturalist with more than thirty years on this water, is happy to talk nesting, roosting and where the spoonbills have been feeding. For a broader primer on who lives out here, read our Everglades wildlife guide.

Family Visits

Airboat Tours Boynton Beach Grandparents Book for Visiting Family

The airboat tours Boynton Beach grandparents book most happen when the family flies in. Kids want alligators, parents want something more than the pool, and grandparents want a day everyone can enjoy together without a long line or a crowded bench.

A private boat solves all three. Your family rides alone with the captain, and every seat is a front-row seat. Our 8-passenger boats fit most families, and the 15-passenger boat or several boats together cover the big holiday gatherings. See the fleet on our boats page.

Comfort and access are part of the plan:

  • Guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp. Details are on our accessible airboat tours page.
  • Hearing protection is provided for every guest, including small children.
  • The captain sets the pace for your group, slow and quiet or a little faster for the teenagers.
  • All ages are welcome.

Mornings usually work best for mixed ages, with good light for spotting gators and cooler air. A day airboat tour has everyone back for lunch. If a grandchild has a birthday during the visit, Captain Billy can turn the ride into a kids birthday airboat tour.

Getting Here From Boynton Beach

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Boynton Beach?

From Boynton Beach, the closest Aces launch is The Landing in Parkland. The usual route: south on Florida's Turnpike or US-441 to Loxahatchee Rd, then west.

  • The Landing, Parkland: about 27 miles, roughly 45-55 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 32 miles, roughly 45-55 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Boynton Beach and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

The Drive

How Far Is Our Launch From Boynton Beach?

From Boynton Beach, two Aces launches are about the same drive away, and both open onto the same northern Everglades. The Landing sits at 15490 Loxahatchee Road in Parkland, and our Sawgrass Expressway ramp at Atlantic Boulevard is a little farther south. The real miles and drive times appear in the getting-here section below.

The usual route is south. Take Florida's Turnpike or US-441 down through western Palm Beach County, then follow Loxahatchee Road west to The Landing, or continue to the Sawgrass Expressway. West Boynton residents near the Turnpike have an easy start. Guests staying near the Boynton Harbor Marina or along Ocean Avenue should add the time it takes to cross town to I-95 or the Turnpike.

You might wonder why we do not launch right beside the refuge. The refuge has its own rules for boats, and our launches give us access to wide, uncrowded Water Conservation Area marsh managed by the South Florida Water Management District. It is the same northern Everglades ecosystem, with fewer boats and plenty of room to roam.

Captain Billy confirms the exact ramp, parking and what to bring when you book. If Stub Canal suits your plans better, he will tell you that too.

Seasons

When Should Boynton Snowbirds Ride?

Snowbird season is one of the best times to ride. The dry season, roughly November through April, lowers the water and gathers fish, birds and gators in the deeper channels. Mornings are cool and comfortable, and the marsh is busy with wintering birds. Our winter Everglades tours are built around that window.

Year-round residents have more options. Spring brings warmer days and active wildlife. Summer turns the marsh deep green, with afternoon storms that roll through quickly, so plan morning or evening rides. Fall eases back toward the dry season. The National Weather Service Miami is the best source for the day's forecast.

What to wear: light layers, a hat that stays on, sunglasses, sunscreen and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. Winter mornings on a moving boat can feel cool, so bring a light jacket.

Getting wet: usually not much. Spray is possible on a windy day or a fast tour, but a relaxed ride rarely sends anyone home damp.

Many Boynton guests who ride once in winter come back in summer for a sunset tour or a night ride to see glowing gator eyes. With the marsh this close, airboat tours Boynton Beach residents take can become a seasonal habit.

Boynton Beach Airboat Tour Questions

Where can I take an airboat ride near Boynton Beach?

Aces Airboat Tours runs private airboat rides for Boynton Beach guests from The Landing on Loxahatchee Road in Parkland and from our Sawgrass Expressway ramp, both a drive south on the Turnpike or US-441. Both open onto the wild northern Everglades, full of gators, wading birds and sawgrass.

Can you take an airboat in the Loxahatchee refuge?

The refuge west of Boynton has its own rules for boats and visitors, so check with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before planning a trip there. Aces runs in the neighboring northern Everglades marsh, the same ecosystem, from launches in Parkland and western Broward.

Are airboat tours good for grandparents and young kids together?

Yes. A private boat lets the captain set the pace for your family, and every seat is a front-row seat. Hearing protection is provided for all ages, and guests who use wheelchairs ride on boats with a boarding ramp. Morning rides tend to suit mixed ages best.

How much does an airboat tour cost near Boynton Beach?

Every tour is a private boat, so text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate. Pricing depends on your group size, the boat and the length of the ride. You pay for your own boat, not a seat on a crowded one.

What is the best month for an airboat tour?

Many guests prefer December through April, the heart of the dry season, when low water concentrates wildlife and mornings are cool. Gators are active year-round, though, and summer evenings bring dramatic skies. Text Captain Billy for his read on current conditions before your airboat tours Boynton Beach date.

Do airboats tip over?

Airboats have wide, flat hulls built for shallow water, which makes them very stable. Our captains run this marsh daily and keep the ride matched to your group. Sit where the captain directs, keep hands inside the boat and you will have a smooth, safe ride.

How long is the drive from Boynton Beach to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Boynton Beach, The Landing in Parkland is about 27 miles away, roughly 45-55 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Boynton Beach?
