Inlet to Marsh

From Ocean Inlet Park to the Everglades Marsh

Ocean Ridge life tends to revolve around the water at the Boynton Inlet. Anglers work the inlet, beachgoers spread out along the Atlantic, and Ocean Inlet Park is where many mornings start. All of that is salt water, ruled by tide and current.

Head inland and you reach a completely different kind of water. The Everglades is fresh, shallow and slow, a sheet of water moving south through sawgrass so gradually it looks still. Instead of breaking waves, you see lily pads, tree islands and long canals running beside levees. The birds are different, the plants are different and the top predator is an alligator, not a shark.

That is why airboat tours Ocean Ridge locals try often become a story they tell visitors. You already know the coast inside out. A private ride across the northern Everglades shows you the wild interior that most beach towns never think about, the same great system that drains south to Everglades National Park.

No ordinary boat could get you there. An airboat has a flat hull and an aircraft-style propeller above the water, so it can glide across a few inches of water and straight over the grass. Our classic Everglades airboat tour is the best first ride.

Local History

A Small Town With a Long Story

Ocean Ridge has a history that surprises most newcomers, and it makes good conversation on the drive out. According to the town's recorded history, it was founded in 1931 as the Town of Boynton Beach and renamed Ocean Ridge in 1939, because mail kept being sent to Daytona Beach by mistake.

The human story here goes back much further. Before Europeans arrived, the Jaega people built shell mounds near today's Boynton Inlet; most were leveled during the land boom. And in 1925, the architect Addison Mizner drew plans for a 2,000-room hotel on this stretch of coast that was never built.

The marsh you ride across has a story of its own. The Everglades once flowed far more freely, and much of today's landscape west of the coast is managed through canals, levees and the Water Conservation Areas. A large state and federal restoration program is working to get more clean fresh water moving south again.

Your captain lived through much of that change. Owner Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, and Captain Bill has more than thirty years as a naturalist captain. Ask either of them how the marsh has changed and you will get a first-hand answer. Both are introduced on our captains page.

Hammocks

Hammock Park Here, Tree Islands Out There

If you have walked Ocean Ridge Hammock Park, you already know what a hammock is: a patch of dense, shady tropical forest. The Everglades has its own version, and it is one of the best parts of an airboat ride.

Out in the marsh, hammocks are called tree islands. They rise a little above the surrounding sawgrass, enough for trees and shrubs to take hold, and from a distance they look like green domes floating on a sea of grass. Birds roost in them, turtles and gators rest along their edges and they give the flat marsh its shape.

On airboat tours, Ocean Ridge visitors pass several, and the captain often stops beside one so you can look and listen. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas and white ibis are regulars, ospreys hunt overhead and a roseate spoonbill is always a treat. Alligators like the deeper water around tree islands, and we see wild gators on the vast majority of trips, though they are wild and never guaranteed.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a useful guide to living safely around alligators, which coastal residents with ponds and canals will appreciate. For more about the animals on a ride, read our Everglades wildlife guide.

Guests from Briny Breezes are welcome too, along with anyone else from this stretch of A1A. Neighbors often plan a ride together, since one call can put a whole group on the water.

Here is how different crowds usually ride:

  • Neighbors and visiting friends: the 15-passenger group boat keeps everyone together; see group airboat tours.
  • Couples: a 2-passenger airboat at sunset, when the marsh goes gold and quiet.
  • Families with children: a day airboat tour on an 8-passenger boat.

Every tour is a private boat for your party, and on our boats every seat is a front-row seat. Guests of all ages ride, we hand out hearing protection on every trip and we run boats with a wheelchair boarding ramp; see our accessible airboat tours.

The Drive and Timing

Planning Airboat Tours Ocean Ridge Style: No Tide Chart Needed

Unlike an inlet fishing trip, an airboat ride does not depend on the tide. Everglades water rises and falls with the seasons and the rain, not the moon, so you can plan around your schedule instead.

The drive is the part to plan honestly. Ocean Ridge sits on the coast in southern Palm Beach County, and our launches are on the northern edge of the Everglades near the Broward line, so it is a real trip south and west. The usual route to The Landing is I-95 or Florida's Turnpike south to Glades Road, west to US-441/SR-7, south to Loxahatchee Road and then west to the end of the road. The other choice is the Sawgrass Expressway to the Atlantic Boulevard ramp. Real miles and drive times are listed in the getting-here section below.

Most airboat tours Ocean Ridge guests take work best as a half-day outing. A sunrise airboat tour means an early start and glassy water; a sunset tour gets you home after dark. Families often pick late morning.

We do not run a shuttle, so guests drive or use a rideshare. Captain Billy confirms the meeting spot when you book, and our pickup locations page lists the launches.

How to Book

Booking and What to Bring

Booking is simple: text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419. Tell him the date, how many people are coming and the time of day you prefer. Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group, the boat and the length of the ride. Ask him for yours.

  1. Send your date, group size and the ages of any children.
  2. Captain Billy picks the boat and ride and confirms the launch.
  3. Arrive a few minutes early and meet your captain at the ramp.

Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat that will not blow off and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. A light jacket helps on winter mornings once the boat is moving. Check the forecast with the National Weather Service in Miami, and see our what to wear guide for more tips.

We hold a 4.9-star Google rating; guests share their rides on our reviews page. For anyone who has spent years on the inlet, airboat tours Ocean Ridge families book with Aces are the other half of South Florida's water.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!

What an absolute amazing experience! Our captain is one of the most experienced men in the Everglades. We explored the wildlife including up to 30 alligators, several species of birds, frogs and fish. Well worth it, and you get a private party instead of being with strangers.

Called Captain Bill at 9 AM and asked if he could do a 10 AM run. He said yes and met me right on time. We saw two alligators, a pink spoonbill and numerous herons. If you want the real Everglades with someone who actually lives in them, book Captain Bill. Highly recommended.
