Quick Answer

The easiest of the airboat tours Tamarac residents can reach is Aces Airboat Tours, launching at the Sawgrass Expressway and Atlantic Blvd, a short expressway hop northwest of town. Every tour is a private boat with a veteran captain, so the pace suits you: slow drifts past alligators, egrets and herons, or a little speed if the grandkids ask for it.

Every Generation

Airboat Tours Tamarac Grandparents and Grandkids Can Share

Tamarac has always been a place people chose for the next chapter of life. As the city's history notes, developer Ken Behring founded it in the early 1960s as an active-adult community. Today Kings Point, Woodmont, the Mainlands and the Woodlands are full of residents who host children and grandchildren every winter and spring break.

That visit always raises the same question: what can three generations do together that everyone actually enjoys? A private airboat ride answers it. Nobody has to hike, nobody waits in a ticket line, and the boat goes where the wildlife is.

Because the boat is yours, the captain sets the pace for the oldest and youngest riders. He can idle slowly past a basking alligator so Grandpa gets the photo, then open the throttle on a long sawgrass straightaway for the teenagers. Of the airboat tours Tamarac families tell us about, this flexibility is what they remember most.

Your captain will be Captain Billy, the owner, who has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, or Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on the water. Both are patient storytellers, and both know this marsh by heart.

The Drive

Getting From Tamarac to the Launch

Getting to airboat tours, Tamarac residents simply head west on Commercial Boulevard or McNab Road to the Sawgrass Expressway, then go north to the Atlantic Boulevard exit and continue west to the levee. That is our Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd launch, the closest of our three ramps to most of Tamarac, and the exact meeting spot is confirmed when you book.

Residents of Colony West or the neighborhoods near the Tamarac Sports Complex will find the route familiar, since it is mostly the same expressway you already use. The real distance and drive time from the center of town are listed in the getting-here section below, along with our other ramps.

We also launch from The Landing at 15490 Loxahatchee Road in Parkland, which suits guests combining the ride with a visit to family further north. All three are described on our pickup locations page.

A few practical notes for older riders:

  • Tell Captain Billy who will be riding, and he will suggest the ramp with the easiest access for your group.
  • Your captain is there to help every guest on and off the boat.
  • Every seat is a front-row seat, so nobody ends up with a blocked view.

If you prefer not to drive, a rideshare works well. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 and he will explain exactly where the driver should drop you.

Accessibility

Accessible Boats and a Comfortable Ride

Yes, guests who use a wheelchair or have limited mobility can ride with us. Several of our airboats are fitted with a boarding ramp, so you roll on at the dock rather than climbing over the side. Details and photos are on our accessible airboat tours page.

Before booking airboat tours, Tamarac guests also ask about comfort. A few honest answers:

  1. Noise. Airboats are loud at speed, so we hand everyone hearing protection. When the captain stops to look at wildlife, the engine goes quiet.
  2. Bumps. The marsh is flat water, and the hull glides on top of it. On a calm tour, the ride is smooth.
  3. Sun. Bring a hat that ties on, sunglasses and sunscreen. Morning and late-day tours are the most comfortable.
  4. Spray. On a slow nature ride, you stay dry. Only fast runs or windy days kick up some water.

We size the boat to the group. Two people can take one of our 2-passenger airboats, a family fits on an 8-passenger boat, and a whole club can share the 15-passenger boat. See every option on our boats page.

Tell Captain Billy about any mobility needs when you text, and he will plan the ramp, the boat and the pace around them.

Getting Here From Tamarac

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Tamarac?

From Tamarac, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: west on Commercial Blvd or McNab Rd to the Sawgrass Expressway, north to Atlantic Blvd.

  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 6 miles, roughly 15-20 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • The Landing, Parkland: about 14 miles, roughly 30-40 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Tamarac and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Birds and Gators

A Birder's Ride Through the River of Grass

For airboat tours, Tamarac birders and photographers have a real advantage: the northern Everglades marsh is one of the best places in South Florida for wading birds, and it starts only a short drive from home. Great blue herons stalk the canal edges, great and snowy egrets light up the sawgrass, anhingas spread their wings to dry and white ibis work the shallows. Ospreys hunt overhead, and roseate spoonbills are a highlight when they appear.

The winter months, when snowbirds are in town, are excellent. Water drops in the dry season and fish concentrate in the deeper channels, which pulls birds and gators together. Our bird watching airboat tours stay slow and stop often, so binoculars and long lenses are welcome.

Alligators are part of nearly every ride. We see them on the vast majority of trips, but they are wild animals and never guaranteed. The National Park Service calls the alligator a keystone species, because the holes it digs hold water through the dry season for fish, turtles and birds.

Curious about the rest of the cast? Our Everglades wildlife guide covers what lives out here and when to look for it.

When to Go

Best Seasons and Times for a Tamarac Outing

Most airboat tours Tamarac hosts plan are on a winter or spring morning, from about November through April. The air is mild, humidity is low and the wildlife is easy to find. That season also lines up with visits from family up north, which is why our winter tours are so popular with Tamarac hosts.

A sunrise ride is the calmest of all, with mirror-flat water and birds leaving their roosts. A sunset tour is the most photogenic and pairs nicely with an early dinner back home. Summer is lush and green, though the afternoons are hot and often stormy, so early and late tours work best then.

When weather looks uncertain, check the National Weather Service in Miami. Storms in this part of Florida tend to pass quickly, and Captain Billy will reschedule if conditions are not safe.

Thinking about the calendar for your next visit from the grandchildren? Our article on the best time to visit the Everglades walks through the seasons month by month, so you can plan the trip for when the birds and the weather are both at their best.

How to Reserve Your Private Ride

To reserve, text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419. He answers the phone himself. Share the date, the number of guests, their ages and anything we should know about mobility, and he will suggest the right boat and time and confirm the launch.

Every ride is a private boat, so the rate depends on the boat and the length of the tour. Ask Captain Billy for yours. There are no crowd tickets, and nobody else joins your group.

Clubs and communities are welcome too. Neighborhood associations, golf groups from around Colony West and church groups fit well on the 15-passenger boat for an outing. See group airboat tours for how those trips work.

We hold a 4.9-star Google rating, and our reviews mention the patience and stories of our captains again and again. When the grandkids arrive and ask what there is to do, airboat tours Tamarac families share are the easy answer.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

Good to Know

Tamarac Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat rides near Tamarac, FL?

Yes. Aces Airboat Tours runs private airboat rides from the Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd, a short drive northwest of Tamarac via Commercial Boulevard or McNab Road. You ride into the open sawgrass and canals of the northern Everglades with your own captain.

Are airboat rides OK for seniors?

Yes. On a private Aces tour, the captain sets a gentle pace, helps every guest on and off and stops often for wildlife. Every seat is a front-row seat, and hearing protection is provided. Tell Captain Billy about any mobility needs when you book.

Can you take a wheelchair on an airboat tour?

Yes. Several Aces airboats have a wheelchair boarding ramp, so guests roll aboard at the dock. Let Captain Billy know when you text 561-660-2419 so he assigns a ramp boat and plans the launch around your group.

How much do airboat tours Tamarac families book cost?

Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group size, the boat and how long you ride. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 for your rate.

What is the best time of year for an airboat ride?

Winter and spring, roughly November through April, bring mild mornings, low humidity and wildlife gathered in the deeper channels. Alligators are active all year, though, and summer sunrise and sunset rides are lush and beautiful.

Do you get wet on an airboat ride?

Usually not. On a calm nature or bird watching tour, you stay dry. A fast ride or a windy day can send up some spray, so keep phones and cameras in a pocket or zip bag.

How long is the drive from Tamarac to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Tamarac, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard is about 6 miles away, roughly 15-20 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Tamarac?

For most Tamarac guests it is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. We also launch from The Landing in Parkland, our Stub Canal launch, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
