Airboat Tours Sunrise Visitors Pair With Sawgrass Mills

Sunrise pulls in visitors from all over the world, and most of them come for Sawgrass Mills or a night at Amerant Bank Arena, home of the Florida Panthers. Very few realize that the real Everglades sits only a few exits away. If you are staying near the mall or the arena, a private airboat ride is the most Florida thing you can add to the trip.

Aces runs things differently from the big roadside parks. Every tour is a private boat for your group, and on our airboats every seat is a front-row seat. There is no 25-person bench, no loudspeaker script and no waiting for the next departure. Your captain talks to you, stops where you want and answers whatever you ask about the marsh.

The people at the stick are the people who own the place. Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, hand-built airboats and still picks up the phone. Captain Bill, a naturalist with more than thirty years on these waters, rounds out the crew. Shoppers who came for the outlets leave with a story about a gator they saw from a few feet away.

Locals book airboat tours. Sunrise neighborhoods such as Welleby, Springtree, Sunrise Lakes and Sunrise Golf Village send us riders all year, usually when friends or family come to stay. For the full story of who we are, see our Everglades airboat tours.

Distance

How Close Is the Everglades to Sunrise, FL?

Closer than almost anywhere else in Broward. Sunrise sits right on the edge of the urban development boundary, the line that separates the suburbs from protected wetland. West of the Sawgrass Expressway and Markham Park, the houses give way to marsh.

To reach our launch, head north on the Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) to the Atlantic Boulevard exit. That ramp is one of three Aces launches; the others are Stub Canal and The Landing in Parkland. For most airboat tours, Sunrise guests use the Atlantic Boulevard ramp because it is the most direct, and Captain Billy confirms the meeting point when you book. The real miles and minutes from Sunrise appear in the getting-here section below.

The water you ride is part of the Water Conservation Areas, the northern half of the historic River of Grass. It connects to the same system that the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan is working to restore, and it lies well north of Everglades National Park. The upshot for you: open marsh, few other boats and a ride that starts minutes after you park.

No rental car? Rideshare to the ramp works well from the hotels around the mall. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with where you are staying, and he will point you to the easiest drop-off. Our pickup locations page has more detail.

Plan Your Day

A Sunrise Day Plan: Marsh in the Morning, Game at Night

The simplest way to fit the Everglades into a Sunrise visit is to put it first. Wildlife is busiest early, the air is cooler, and you are back in town with the whole afternoon free. Here is a plan guests use all the time:

  1. Morning: take a private ride from the Atlantic Boulevard launch. Early risers can ask for a sunrise departure to catch the marsh waking up.
  2. Midday: lunch and a few hours of shopping at Sawgrass Mills.
  3. Evening: a hockey game or concert at Amerant Bank Arena, or a sunset tour if you would rather finish the day on the water.

When booking airboat tours, Sunrise hotel guests often ask how much time to block out. Tell Captain Billy your fixed plans, such as a game time, a dinner reservation or a flight, and he will set the ride length and launch time to fit.

Groups in town for an event love this too. A bachelor or bachelorette party, a company offsite or a team of friends who came down for a Panthers game can share our 15-passenger group boat or spread across several private boats. See group airboat tours and bachelor party airboat tours for ideas.

Getting Here From Sunrise

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Sunrise?

From Sunrise, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: north on the Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869) to the Atlantic Blvd exit.

  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 7 miles, roughly 15-20 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • The Landing, Parkland: about 18 miles, roughly 30-40 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Sunrise and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Local History

The Town That Almost Named Itself Sunset

Sunrise has a quirky origin story. The community was almost called Sunset Village, but early residents felt that sunset sounded too final for a new town, so they flipped it to Sunrise. Developer Norman Johnson then grabbed national attention in the early 1960s with an upside-down house that made Life magazine. Both stories are part of the city's recorded history.

What those early builders were pushing against was the Everglades itself. The land west of today's city was wet prairie and sawgrass, part of a sheet of slow-moving water that once flowed south from Lake Okeechobee. Drainage canals and levees made the suburbs possible, and the boundary that now sits on Sunrise's western edge marks where development stops and protected marsh begins.

On an airboat, you cross that line and see what the whole region looked like before the roads. Tree islands rise out of the grass like hedgerows. Canals cut straight lines beside the levees. Lily-pad pools hold turtles and young gators. Your captain can point out how water moves through the system and why the marsh changes between the wet and dry seasons.

Visitors mostly come for the view. When locals ask about airboat tours, Sunrise residents tend to want the history as much as the wildlife: they want to see the ground their city was carved from. Either reason is a good one, and Captain Bill, our long-time naturalist captain, is happy to talk about both.

Wildlife

What Lives Out Past the Sawgrass Expressway

On airboat tours, Sunrise guests meet American alligators, wading birds, turtles and fish living among sawgrass, open water and tree islands. We see gators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults sunning on a bank to hatchlings tucked into the lily pads. They are wild animals, so we never guarantee one. The National Park Service explains why the alligator is called the keystone species of the Everglades: the holes they dig hold water for other animals in the dry season.

Birds steal the show for many guests. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas, white ibis and ospreys are regulars, and roseate spoonbills turn up often enough to keep cameras ready. Birders should look at our bird watching airboat tours, which run at a slower pace with more time stopped.

Your captain knows where things tend to be. He reads the water daily, so he knows which tree island a big gator likes and where the herons gather late in the day. When he shuts the engine off, the marsh goes quiet and you hear the birds instead of the expressway.

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

Sunrise Airboat Tour Questions

Are there airboat rides near Sawgrass Mills?

Yes. Aces Airboat Tours launches from the Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Boulevard, a short drive north of Sawgrass Mills. Every ride is a private boat with a native captain. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 and he will confirm the launch and the easiest route from the mall area.

How far is Sunrise, Florida from the Everglades?

Almost no distance at all. Sunrise sits on the urban development boundary, and protected Everglades marsh begins just west of the Sawgrass Expressway. Our nearest launch is a direct expressway drive north, and the real miles and minutes are listed in the getting-here section.

Can I take an airboat tour before a Panthers game?

Usually, yes. A morning or early afternoon ride leaves plenty of time to get back to Amerant Bank Arena. Tell Captain Billy your game time when you book, and he will choose a launch time and ride length that keep your evening on schedule.

Do airboat tours pick up from Sunrise hotels?

We do not run a shuttle. Most hotel guests in Sunrise drive or take a rideshare to the ramp, which is an easy trip up the Sawgrass Expressway. Text Captain Billy with your hotel and he will tell you exactly where to be dropped off.

Is an airboat tour worth it?

For most people it is the highlight of a South Florida trip. You cross marsh no car or kayak can reach, see wild alligators and birds up close and learn the area from someone who lives it. A private boat makes it better, since nobody blocks your view.

How much does an airboat ride cost in Sunrise, FL?

Aces prices every ride as a private boat, so the rate depends on your group size, the boat you need and how long you ride. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 and he will give you a straight answer for your group.

How long is the drive from Sunrise to an Aces airboat launch?

From central Sunrise, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard is about 7 miles away, roughly 15-20 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.

Which Aces launch is closest to Sunrise?

For most Sunrise guests it is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. We also launch from The Landing in Parkland, our Stub Canal launch, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
