Big Families

The Family Day Everyone Remembers

When the whole family is in town, an airboat ride gives everyone one shared adventure. Lauderdale Lakes is a city of close families, and many of them have relatives spread across the Caribbean, the Northeast and Canada. In 2018 about half of residents reported West Indian ancestry, the highest share in Broward County. When those relatives visit, hosts want to show them something they cannot see back home.

The Everglades does that. Most visitors, wherever home is, have never seen a wild alligator sunning on a sawgrass bank a few feet from the boat. That is the moment people talk about at the next family dinner.

Aces is family-owned too. Owner Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades and answers the phone himself. Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on this water, shares the tours. Both are used to grandparents, toddlers and teenagers all on one ride, and they set the pace so everybody enjoys it.

Every tour is a private boat for your group, so the reunion stays a family affair.

Group Planning

One Boat or Several: Sizing a Reunion Ride

For airboat tours, Lauderdale Lakes reunions need the right setup, and it depends on how many people are coming and how many generations are in the mix. Our fleet is small on purpose, and it covers most family sizes:

  • 2-passenger airboats (four of them): perfect for a couple or a grandparent and grandchild who want their own ride.
  • 8-passenger airboats (two of them): a household or two riding together.
  • 15-passenger boat (one): the whole branch of the family on one shared ride.

For really big reunions, we run several private boats together, so cousins, aunts and uncles head out at the same time and meet back at the ramp. Every seat on every boat is a front-row seat. You can see the fleet on our boats page and read about bigger outings on our group airboat tours page.

Grandparents who use wheelchairs can ride too. Our accessible airboat tours use boats with a boarding ramp. Mention mobility needs when you book so the right boat is ready.

The organizer only needs to send one text to Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with the headcount, ages and a few possible dates. He will suggest the best combination.

How Close Are Airboat Tours, Lauderdale Lakes Residents Ask

Closer than most people expect. Lauderdale Lakes sits in central Broward, so the edge of the Everglades is a fairly short drive west, shorter than from the beach cities or south Broward. The exact miles and minutes print in the getting-here section below.

There are two simple ways out:

  1. West on Oakland Park or Commercial Boulevard to the Sawgrass Expressway, then north to the Atlantic Boulevard ramp.
  2. North on US-441 / State Road 7 all the way to Loxahatchee Road, then west to the end of the road, for The Landing launch.

Captain Billy confirms the meeting spot when you book and will tell you which route suits your neighborhood, whether you live in Golf Estates, East Gate Park or along the State Road 7 corridor.

Because the drive is short, evening tours are easy. A sunset tour or the Red Eye Gator night airboat tour still gets you home at a reasonable hour, which helps when relatives have early flights. When comparing airboat tours, Lauderdale Lakes hosts often pick the night ride for cousins who want a little thrill and a day ride for grandparents.

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Lauderdale Lakes?

From Lauderdale Lakes, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: west on Oakland Park Blvd or Commercial Blvd to the Sawgrass Expressway, north to Atlantic Blvd.

  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 11 miles, roughly 20-30 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • The Landing, Parkland: about 17 miles, roughly 35-45 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Lauderdale Lakes and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Local Story

From Snowbird Retreat to Family City

Lauderdale Lakes was incorporated on June 22, 1961, and for its first years it was best known as a retirement area for snowbirds. Over the following decades it became a full family city, home to a large Caribbean-American community and, until 2003, the headquarters of sporting goods retailer Sports Authority.

The marsh west of town has a longer story still. Our launches sit beside the Water Conservation Areas, a vast managed section of the original Everglades overseen by the South Florida Water Management District. Water moves slowly south through the sawgrass toward Everglades National Park, feeding wildlife the whole way.

Visiting relatives often notice how different it is from the coast. The northern Everglades is fresh water, flat and open, with sawgrass to the horizon and tree islands standing up like small green hills. Captains enjoy explaining how those tree islands form and why sawgrass has tiny teeth along its edges.

If your family likes a walk at Willie L. Webb Sr. Park, think of the marsh as that green space stretched across thousands of acres, with alligators instead of joggers.

Wildlife

What the Whole Family Will See

Alligators lead the show. We see wild American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults basking on the banks to babies tucked into the lily pads. They are wild, so we never promise a number. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a good overview for curious relatives.

Every generation finds something to point at:

  • Kids: baby gators, turtles stacked on logs and anhingas drying their wings.
  • Teenagers: the speed, the spins and the roar of the propeller.
  • Grandparents: great blue herons, egrets, white ibis and the occasional pink roseate spoonbill.
  • Photographers: open sawgrass, tree islands and big skies at sunrise or sunset.

Hearing protection is handed out to everyone, from toddlers to elders. Airboats are loud under power, and when the captain cuts the engine for a wildlife stop, the quiet is just as memorable as the speed.

For a deeper look at the animals, read our Everglades wildlife guide or our post on what to expect on an Everglades airboat tour.

How to Book

Booking a Family Ride

Booking is a conversation with the owner, not a checkout page. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your date, headcount, ages and preferred time of day. He will match your family to the right boats, confirm the launch and send directions.

Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group size, the boats and the length of the ride. Ask Captain Billy for yours directly.

A few tips for family organizers:

  • Book early for holiday weeks, when visiting relatives fill the calendar.
  • Pack hats that stay on, sunscreen, water and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. Our what to wear guide has the full list.
  • Summer afternoons bring storms, so mornings or evenings are safer from June through September.

Families who want to hear from others first can read our reviews page, where we hold a 4.9-star Google rating. Airboat tours Lauderdale Lakes relatives still talk about back home begin with one text.

Called Captain Bill at 9 AM and asked if he could do a 10 AM run. He said yes and met me right on time. We saw two alligators, a pink spoonbill and numerous herons. If you want the real Everglades with someone who actually lives in them, book Captain Bill. Highly recommended.
