Everglades Tours From Fort Lauderdale: How to Choose
Planning Everglades tours from Fort Lauderdale? Here is an honest look at your options, from big airboat parks to the national park to a private ride in the northern Glades, and how to fit the trip into a half day from the beach, downtown or the cruise port.
“Text or call me and I’ll get you out on the water — I can’t wait to see you out in the swamp!”— Captain Billy, owner & native Everglades guideThe quickest Everglades tours from Fort Lauderdale head west to the northern Everglades, where Aces Airboat Tours runs private airboats from three launches in western Broward and Parkland. Large airboat parks and Everglades National Park are other options but sit farther south and west. A private northern-Glades ride fits easily into a half day, with wild gators and no crowd.

Your Options for Everglades Tours From Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale sits on the doorstep of the largest subtropical wilderness in the country, and there are three main ways to see it in a day.
1. Large airboat parks. Several established parks west and southwest of the city run big airboats, often with wildlife shows, gift shops and food on site. They suit visitors who want an attraction-style outing with everything in one place.
2. Everglades National Park. The park's entrances are farther south, along the Tamiami Trail and near Homestead. You get ranger programs, trails, boardwalks and visitor centers. It is a full-day trip from Fort Lauderdale for most people.
3. A private airboat in the northern Everglades. This is what Aces does. We launch on the western edge of Broward and Palm Beach County, ride into the Water Conservation Areas and marsh near the Loxahatchee refuge, and keep every boat private for your group.
All three are good Everglades tours from Fort Lauderdale. The right one depends on how much time you have, how you feel about crowds and what you most want to see. The sections below walk through each choice so you can plan with confidence, and our guide on how far the Everglades is from Fort Lauderdale covers distances in more depth.
Airboat Park or Private Boat: An Honest Comparison
Both styles put you on an airboat in real Everglades water. The difference is in the experience around it.
| Question | Large airboat park | Private northern-Glades airboat |
|---|---|---|
| Who is on the boat? | Often twenty or more guests | Only your group, from two to fifteen |
| Where do you sit? | Front rows are best; middle seats see less | Every seat is a front-row seat |
| Pace and stops | Set route and timing | Your captain stops when you want |
| Extras on site | Shows, shops and food | Just the marsh and the wildlife |
| Booking | Ticket for a scheduled departure | Text the owner and choose your time |
If your group wants a busy attraction with a show, a park is a fine choice. If you want quiet stretches of sawgrass, close looks at wild alligators and a captain who answers every question, private is the better fit.
Aces is built on that second model. Owner Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, and Captain Bill brings more than thirty years as a naturalist captain. See the boats on our boats page and the full lineup on our tours page.

Visiting Everglades National Park From Fort Lauderdale
The national park protects the southern end of the Everglades, where the River of Grass meets mangroves and Florida Bay. It is a remarkable place, and if you have a full day, it is worth the trip.
From Fort Lauderdale, most visitors head to one of two areas. Shark Valley, on the Tamiami Trail, has a paved loop with a tram tour and an observation tower. The main entrance near Homestead leads to the Anhinga Trail boardwalk and the road toward Flamingo. Both are a long drive south, so plan on a full day. Check hours, fees and programs directly with the National Park Service.
One point many visitors miss: Aces does not operate inside the national park. We ride the northern Everglades, which is part of the same ecosystem and managed for water and wildlife by the South Florida Water Management District and federal partners.
Many guests do both on separate days: a ranger-led walk in the park, and a private airboat ride up north when they want speed, open marsh and alligators up close. If you only have a morning or an afternoon, the northern Glades is the practical choice for Everglades tours from Fort Lauderdale.
How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Fort Lauderdale?
From Fort Lauderdale, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: I-95 north to the Sawgrass Expressway (exit 41), west to Atlantic Blvd; or west on I-595 to the Sawgrass Expressway north.
- Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 16 miles, roughly 30-40 minutes by car outside rush hour.
- The Landing, Parkland: about 24 miles, roughly 45-55 minutes by car outside rush hour.
We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.
Times are measured from central Fort Lauderdale and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.
A Half-Day Plan From the Beach, Downtown or the Port
A private northern-Everglades ride fits neatly into half a day. Here are three plans guests use.
Morning wildlife, afternoon beach.
- Leave your hotel after breakfast and drive west to the launch.
- Ride a sunrise or morning day tour while the air is cool and wildlife is active.
- Grab lunch on the way back and spend the afternoon on Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Beach day, sunset on the water. Enjoy the sand, then head west in the late afternoon for a sunset airboat tour. You will be back in time for a late dinner downtown or on Las Olas.
Cruise day. If you sail from Port Everglades, a private ride the day before you board, or after you disembark, works well. Text Captain Billy your ship times and he will plan around them.
Night owls can swap any of these for the Red Eye Gator night tour, when alligator eyes glow in the spotlight. For more ideas around town, see our weekend in Fort Lauderdale itinerary.

Real Google reviews from guests who rode the wild Everglades with Captain Billy and Captain Bill.
We went with our friends visiting from out of town, and our kids. Captain Bill was so knowledgeable, he knew the area so well and showed us a ton of alligators up close. The tour was a 10/10.
We booked a 2 hour private tour, which seems to be the right amount of time to see everything. Very easy meeting spot at a boat landing. Our captain was fantastic and I can't say enough great things. He put us on some alligators. We will definitely be back.
The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!
What an absolute amazing experience! Our captain is one of the most experienced men in the Everglades. We explored the wildlife including up to 30 alligators, several species of birds, frogs and fish. Well worth it, and you get a private party instead of being with strangers.

Everglades Trip Questions
What is the best Everglades tour from Fort Lauderdale?
It depends on your day. For an attraction with shows, a large airboat park works. For trails and ranger programs, plan a full day at Everglades National Park. For wild gators, open marsh and no crowd in half a day, a private northern-Everglades airboat with Aces is the best fit.
Can you visit the Everglades in half a day from Fort Lauderdale?
Yes. The northern Everglades starts at the western edge of Broward County, so a private airboat ride plus the drive fits easily into a morning or afternoon. Trips to Everglades National Park take longer because its entrances are much farther south.
Do Everglades tours from Fort Lauderdale include transportation?
Some large tour packages do. Aces does not run a shuttle; most guests drive or take a rideshare to the launch. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your hotel and he will suggest the easiest launch for pickup and drop-off.
Is an airboat ride or the national park better?
They are different experiences. The national park is best for trails, boardwalks and visitor centers. An airboat ride covers wild marsh fast and gets you close to alligators and birds. Many visitors do the park on one day and a private airboat ride on another.
When is the best time of year to visit the Everglades?
The dry season, about November through April, is the most comfortable and the easiest for spotting wildlife. Summer is lush and dramatic, with afternoon storms, so morning, evening and night rides work best then.
What should I wear on an Everglades tour?
Light layers, sunglasses, a secure hat, sunscreen and closed-toe shoes or secure sandals. Add bug spray in summer or at dusk. On an airboat, keep your phone in a pocket or zip bag. We provide hearing protection.
How long is the drive from Fort Lauderdale to an Aces airboat launch?
From central Fort Lauderdale, our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard is about 16 miles away, roughly 30-40 minutes by car outside rush hour. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot when you book by text or call at 561-660-2419.
Which Aces launch is closest to Fort Lauderdale?
For most Fort Lauderdale guests it is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. We also launch from The Landing in Parkland, our Stub Canal launch, and every launch opens onto the same wild northern Everglades.
