Airboat Tours Cooper City Families Plan Around Game Day

Cooper City calls itself Someplace Special, and for most families here the special part is simple: good schools, quiet streets in Rock Creek, Embassy Lakes, Country Glen and Monterra, and weekends spent at Brian Piccolo Sports Park and the Cooper City Sports Complex. Plenty of parents know the velodrome and the ball fields better than their own kitchens.

An Everglades airboat ride is the change of pace those weekends need. Instead of folding chairs and a scoreboard, you get open sawgrass, tree islands and wild alligators, with a captain who has spent his life on this water. It works as a family day, a team reward or a birthday nobody forgets.

Aces is family-owned, and every tour is a private boat for your group alone. On our airboats every seat is a front-row seat, so even the smallest player sees everything. The captain talks with your kids directly, stops when someone spots a gator and keeps the pace right for the age of the group.

The people running it are the owners. Captain Billy has more than sixty years in and around the Everglades and builds airboats by hand. Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on these waters, is the other face you might meet at the ramp.

Honest Distance

Is the Drive From Cooper City Worth It?

Yes, and here is the honest version. Cooper City sits in southwest Broward, and our three launches are on the northern edge of the Everglades, so the trip is a real expressway drive north rather than a quick hop. The real miles and minutes from Cooper City are listed in the getting-here section below.

The usual route:

  1. Head north on Flamingo Road or I-75 to I-595.
  2. Take I-595 west to the Sawgrass Expressway.
  3. Go north on the Sawgrass to the Atlantic Boulevard exit, where our nearest launch sits.
  4. Park, meet your captain and board.

Our other two launches are Stub Canal and The Landing in Parkland, and Captain Billy confirms which one you are using when you book. Details are on the pickup locations page.

Why make the drive when there are parks closer to the south? Because the northern marsh is quiet. You ride a private boat on open water with no line, no loudspeaker and no 25-seat bench. For airboat tours, Cooper City families who have tried both usually tell us the private ride felt like a different trip entirely.

Make a day of it. Our guide to outdoor activities in Broward County has ideas for the rest of the afternoon.

Team Outings, Birthdays and End-of-Season Parties

A season wrap party on an airboat beats another pizza place. Our fleet is built for exactly this kind of group: one 15-passenger boat that carries a team together, two 8-passenger airboats and four 2-passenger boats for smaller crews. Bigger rosters can split across several private boats that ride out side by side.

Here is how sports families usually set it up:

Every guest gets hearing protection, and all ages are welcome. Kids who use a wheelchair can ride on our ramp-equipped boats, so nobody on the team sits out.

When coaches call about airboat tours, Cooper City teams often want a date right after the final game. Give Captain Billy a couple of options early in the season, since popular weekends can fill up.

Getting Here From Cooper City

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Cooper City?

From Cooper City, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: north on Flamingo Rd or I-75 to I-595, then the Sawgrass Expressway north to Atlantic Blvd.

  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 19 miles, roughly 30-40 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • The Landing, Parkland: about 30 miles, roughly 45-55 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Cooper City and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

Local History

From Dairy Pasture to Open Marsh

Cooper City is young by Florida standards. It is named for Morris Cooper, who founded the community in 1959, and as recently as 2006 the city annexed the former Waldrep Dairy Farm, according to its recorded history.

Before the pastures, much of western Broward was wet Everglades prairie, and canals and levees made farming and then neighborhoods possible. A large piece of that original wetland survives to the north and west in the Water Conservation Areas, managed by the South Florida Water Management District. That is where we ride.

Kids who learn Florida history in school get to see the real landscape on a ride. Your captain can show them:

  • how sawgrass grows so thick that only an airboat can cross it;
  • why tree islands rise out of the water and hold so many birds;
  • how the canals and levees move water south through the system.

An airboat is built for this country. The flat hull floats in very shallow water, an aircraft-style propeller pushes from behind and rudders steer, so there is nothing under the boat to tangle in the grass. For school groups and scout troops, that turns a field trip into a story the kids actually remember.

Wildlife

What Kids Spot From the Front Row

On airboat tours, Cooper City kids usually give alligators top billing, and for good reason. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults on a bank to young ones peeking out of the lily pads. They are wild animals, so we never make promises. The National Park Service has a kid-friendly explanation of how gators shape the whole marsh.

Birds keep the hunt going between gators. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas with their wings spread, white ibis and ospreys are regular sightings, and roseate spoonbills are the pink prize. Turtles line the canal banks on warm days.

A few tips that help kids enjoy it:

  • Hats with a strap, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Shoes that stay on, and a light jacket on winter mornings.
  • A small snack and water for the drive.

Our guide to where to see alligators in South Florida and the Everglades wildlife guide make good homework before the trip.

The Red Eye Gator tour is the best way to see gators, an absolutely awesome experience zipping through the Everglades during twilight. Lots and lots of gators awake and active. Captain Billy is very knowledgeable and one hell of a captain!

What an absolute amazing experience! Our captain is one of the most experienced men in the Everglades. We explored the wildlife including up to 30 alligators, several species of birds, frogs and fish. Well worth it, and you get a private party instead of being with strangers.

Called Captain Bill at 9 AM and asked if he could do a 10 AM run. He said yes and met me right on time. We saw two alligators, a pink spoonbill and numerous herons. If you want the real Everglades with someone who actually lives in them, book Captain Bill. Highly recommended.
