Honest Distance

Is the Drive From Hollywood Worth It?

Here is the honest answer: our launches are a real drive from Hollywood. Several big commercial airboat parks sit closer to the city than we do, and we will not pretend otherwise. If the shortest possible trip is your top priority, one of those parks may suit you better.

What you get for the extra miles is a different kind of ride. At Aces, your group has the boat to itself. There is no line, no microphone and no middle seat; every seat is a front-row seat. The captain is either Captain Billy, who has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades and built the business, or Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on the water. Meet them both on our captains page.

The water is different too. We run on the northern side of the River of Grass, in the Water Conservation Areas beyond the western Broward levee, rather than on the busier corridors where crowd boats run all day. Long stretches of sawgrass, quiet canals and tree islands are the norm.

So the trade is simple. If convenience matters most, ride close by. If you want a private boat on uncrowded marsh, the airboat tours Hollywood guests take with Aces are worth the drive west.

The Route

Getting From Hollywood Beach to Our Launches

From Hollywood Beach or downtown, take I-95 or I-595 west to the Sawgrass Expressway, then head north to the Atlantic Boulevard exit, our nearest ramp. The getting-here section below lists the real miles and drive time from the center of Hollywood, so you can plan around interstate traffic.

Captain Billy will tell you which launch suits your tour that day, and he confirms the meeting point when you book. Every address is on our pickup locations page.

No car? Plenty of beach guests take a rideshare. Text Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your hotel, whether it is on the Broadwalk, along A1A, at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, the Diplomat or out at the Seminole Hard Rock, and he will suggest the launch that makes pickup and drop-off simplest. We do not run a shuttle, so line up your return ride before you head out.

Build the day around the drive, since airboat tours Hollywood guests take from the coast work best unhurried. A sunrise ride gets you back to the sand by late morning, and a sunset ride ends in time for dinner downtown or at the Guitar Hotel. Our post on how far the Everglades is from Fort Lauderdale covers the drive in from the coast in more detail.

Airboat Tours Hollywood Snowbirds and Hotel Guests Book

Airboat tours Hollywood guests plan usually fit one of two kinds of day: a gentle family outing for winter residents, or one adrenaline-filled inland day for hotel guests taking a break from the sand. Each wants something different from the ride.

Snowbirds who winter near the Broadwalk or in Hollywood Hills often book a slower nature ride when the grandchildren visit. The dry season, roughly November through April, brings cooler mornings and wildlife gathered in the deeper channels. Our Everglades winter tours page explains what changes on the marsh in those months. For older guests, the captain keeps a gentle pace, and ramp-equipped boats welcome riders who use wheelchairs.

Hotel guests usually want more speed. The fast airboat tour delivers full-throttle runs through the sawgrass, spins and slides, while the sunset ride suits couples staying at a beach resort. Bachelor and bachelorette groups in town for a Hard Rock weekend fit on one boat or several boats together; see bachelor party airboat tours.

When comparing airboat tours, Hollywood visitors should know the boat is yours alone either way. Text Captain Billy who is coming and what you want from the day, and he will steer you to the ride that fits.

From Hollywood, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: I-95 or I-595 west to the Sawgrass Expressway, north to Atlantic Blvd.

  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 25 miles, roughly 35-45 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • The Landing, Parkland: about 35 miles, roughly 50-60 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Coast and Marsh

From Joseph Young's Planned City to the Wild Glades

Hollywood is a planned city, and the Everglades is the opposite. Joseph Young laid out Hollywood during the 1920s Florida boom, and its yacht basins were designed by George Washington Goethals, the engineer of the Panama Canal, according to the city's Wikipedia history. Today the city has about five to six miles of Atlantic beach.

Out west, nobody laid anything out. The River of Grass is a slow sheet of water moving south through sawgrass, broken by tree islands where hardwoods grow on slightly higher ground. Restoring that natural flow is the aim of the multi-agency effort described at evergladesrestoration.gov, and the Water Conservation Areas where we ride are a working part of that system.

Going from one to the other in a single day is part of the appeal. In the morning you can stroll the ArtsPark at Young Circle or the Broadwalk; by late afternoon you are drifting with the engine off, listening to wind in the sawgrass while an anhinga dries its wings on a snag. Hollywood's own green spaces, West Lake Park with the Anne Kolb Nature Center and T.Y. Park, give a small taste of Florida's wetlands. The airboat shows you their full scale.

Wildlife, Weather and Booking From Hollywood

Guests from Hollywood usually see American alligators, great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas, white ibis, ospreys and turtles. Gators show up on the vast majority of trips, but they are wild animals and never guaranteed. Roseate spoonbills are a bonus when they appear.

Weather matters more when you are driving in from the coast. Summer afternoons bring quick storms, so morning and evening rides are the safer bet from June through September. Check our Everglades weather page before you leave the hotel. Dress in light layers, closed-toe shoes or secure sandals and sunglasses; we hand out hearing protection on every ride.

Booking is personal, not a web form:

  1. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your date, group size and hotel.
  2. He matches you with a boat and tour and confirms the launch.
  3. Arrange your ride out, arrive a few minutes early and meet your captain.

Every tour is a private boat, so the rate depends on your group and the length of the ride; ask Captain Billy for yours. Read what other guests say on our reviews page, where we hold a 4.9-star Google rating. Airboat tours Hollywood visitors talk about long after the trip start with one text.

Our family had an incredible time with our captain. He shared so many interesting facts about the alligators and went out of his way to make sure we saw several, despite the weather. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing trip with the best airboat captain ever. My daughter and I were impressed by the whole trip, the cool stories, the amazing Everglades and the hospitality. We got to watch at least 20 gators, even a mother with several babies. Thank you!

Your group gets its own boat and captain.

How far is the Everglades from Hollywood Beach?
