Straight Talk

Is the Drive North From Hallandale Beach Worth It?

Yes, if you want a private boat and an uncrowded marsh, the drive is worth it. We will be honest up front: Hallandale Beach sits at the very bottom of Broward, and our launches are on the northern edge of the Everglades. You will spend more time in the car than a guest from Coral Springs or Parkland does. The real miles and minutes print in the getting-here section below.

What you get for that drive is the part most visitors never see. Instead of joining a big park boat with a microphone and a gift shop, you ride on your own boat with a native captain. Nobody else is aboard, nobody sits in a middle seat, and your captain stops where you want to stop.

Many guests who choose airboat tours, Hallandale Beach condo residents especially, treat it as a planned morning out rather than a quick errand. Leave after breakfast, ride the marsh, have lunch on the way home and be back on your balcony by mid-afternoon.

Owner Captain Billy has spent more than sixty years in and around the Everglades, and he answers the phone himself. Tell him which part of Hallandale you are coming from and he will point you to the launch with the simplest drive.

Snowbird Season

A Winter Ritual for Canada's Southernmost City

Hallandale Beach and neighboring Hollywood host so many Canadian visitors every winter that the area has been called "Canada's southernmost city". That is good news for an airboat ride, because the snowbird season lines up with the best months on the marsh.

From roughly November through April, the dry season brings cooler mornings, lower water and wildlife gathered in the deeper channels where gators and wading birds are easier to find. Our winter Everglades tours are built around those conditions. A sunrise ride in January, with mist lifting off the sawgrass, is a very different South Florida from the beach towel and the boardwalk.

Snowbird groups often book together. A few couples from the same Golden Isles street or the same Three Islands building can share a boat, and a larger gathering fits on our 15-passenger boat or across several private boats. Grandkids visiting over the holidays are welcome too: all ages ride, and we hand out hearing protection to everyone.

If mobility is a concern, ask about our accessible airboat tours, which use boats with a boarding ramp for wheelchair users. Captain Billy will set a gentle pace for anyone who prefers a smooth, scenic ride over speed.

Plan the Day

Airboat Tours Hallandale Beach Visitors Pair With the Rest of the Day

The best way to fit an airboat ride into a Hallandale Beach stay is to give it a half day and plan the rest around it. Here are the patterns that work for our guests.

  1. Morning marsh, afternoon beach. A sunrise tour catches calm water and active wildlife, and you are back at South City Beach Park or your A1A pool by early afternoon.
  2. Midday ride, evening at Gulfstream. A daytime tour gets you home in time for an evening at Gulfstream Park or The Village at Gulfstream Park.
  3. Golden hour. A sunset tour puts you on the water for the best light of the day, with dinner later closer to home.

Visitors who split their stay between Hallandale and Aventura hotels follow the same plan: one dedicated morning or afternoon, and an easy rest of the day. When comparing airboat tours, Hallandale Beach guests tell us the private boat is what made the drive feel worthwhile, because the time on the water is all theirs.

No car this trip? Many guests take a rideshare to the launch. Text Captain Billy with your building or hotel and he will tell you which ramp makes the simplest pickup and drop-off.

Getting Here From Hallandale Beach

How Far Is the Airboat Launch From Hallandale Beach?

From Hallandale Beach, the closest Aces launch is our Sawgrass Expressway launch at Atlantic Boulevard. The usual route: I-95 north to I-595 west, then the Sawgrass Expressway north to Atlantic Blvd.

  • Sawgrass Expressway at Atlantic Blvd: about 30 miles, roughly 40-50 minutes by car outside rush hour.
  • The Landing, Parkland: about 40 miles, roughly 60-70 minutes by car outside rush hour.

We also run trips from our Stub Canal launch on request; ask Captain Billy which ramp suits your group.

Times are measured from central Hallandale Beach and grow at rush hour and on event weekends. Captain Billy confirms the exact meeting spot, parking and what to bring when you text or call 561-660-2419. All three launches open onto the same wild, gator-rich northern Everglades, so pick whichever is easiest for your day. See every launch on our pickup locations page.

What You See

Ocean Out Front, River of Grass Out Back

On an Aces ride you trade salt water and sea grape for fresh water and sawgrass. Our launches sit beside the Water Conservation Areas, a vast managed part of the original Everglades that the South Florida Water Management District oversees. The water here moves slowly south through the system toward Everglades National Park.

Expect open sawgrass to the horizon, tree islands, lily-pad pools and long canals cut beside the levees. We see American alligators on the vast majority of trips, from big adults basking on the banks to small ones tucked into the lily pads. They are wild, so we never promise a number. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a good overview of the species if you want to read up before you ride.

Birds are the other highlight. Great blue herons, great and snowy egrets, anhingas, white ibis and ospreys are regulars, with roseate spoonbills a treat when they appear. Winter brings extra bird life to the marsh, which suits the snowbird calendar nicely.

If you have walked the paths at Peter Bluesten Park or Three Islands Park, picture that greenery stretched across thousands of open acres with no buildings in sight. That is the northern Everglades. Our Everglades wildlife guide covers the full cast.

Pick Your Tour

Choosing the Right Ride for Your Group

Among airboat tours, Hallandale Beach families and couples find the right ride depends on who is coming and how much speed they want. Most first-timers start with our signature Everglades airboat tour, a private run through sawgrass, canals and tree islands with stops for wildlife.

  • Couples and retirees: a scenic day or sunset ride at a relaxed pace.
  • Visiting grandkids: a daytime tour with plenty of stops to look for gators.
  • Thrill seekers: a fast tour with full-throttle runs and slides.
  • Night owls: the Red Eye Gator night tour, spotlighting glowing eyes after dark.
  • Building or club outings: the 15-passenger boat or several private boats running together.

Our fleet is small on purpose: two 8-passenger airboats, four 2-passenger airboats and one 15-passenger boat. Every seat is a front-row seat. See them all on our boats page.

Captain Bill, a naturalist captain with more than thirty years on this water, shares the work with Captain Billy. Either one will happily explain how a tree island forms or why sawgrass has edges like a saw. Ask anything along the way.

How to Book

Booking From a Hallandale Condo or Hotel

Booking airboat tours, Hallandale Beach style, is a quick text or phone call, not a checkout page. Text or call Captain Billy at 561-660-2419 with your date, the size of your group and the time of day you prefer. He will match you to a boat, confirm the launch with the easiest drive from your building and send directions. The exact meeting spot is confirmed when you book.

Because every tour is a private boat, the rate depends on your group and the length of the ride, so ask him for yours directly.

A few planning notes for south Broward guests:

  1. Leave a little extra time for I-95 and I-595 traffic, especially on weekday mornings in season.
  2. Bring sunglasses, a hat that stays put, sunscreen and a light layer for winter mornings. Our what to wear guide has more.
  3. Check the forecast on our Everglades weather page the night before.

Hallandale Beach takes its name from Luther Halland, son of a Swedish worker on Henry Flagler's railroad, and the town spent decades as plain Hallandale before adding "Beach" in 1999. Captain Billy knows the marsh with that same local depth. Read what others say on our reviews page, where we hold a 4.9-star Google rating.
